The Prophet sallallaahu ‘alayhi wasallam has mentioned in a hadeeth that one should live in this world like a passer by. To understand this one should ponder upon how he spends his time at the service station on the motorway.
At the service station one only buys what he needs, and as soon as he has finished what he needed to do he will continue with his journey. A person will not involve himself in futile activities whilst at the services.
Our condition in this world should be akin to the traveller who has stopped at the services for a little while. He fulfils his need and then passes by.
