Do Not Trouble Other People

All praise is for Allah. We praise Him and seek His help and ask Him for forgiveness. And we believe in Him and trust in Him. We seek refuge in Allah, from the mischief of our souls and from our evil deeds. He whom Allah guides none can mislead and whom He leaves to stray none can guide. And, we bear witness that there is no god except Allah Who is Alone and has no partner, and we bear witness that Sayyidina Muhammad Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam is His servant and Messenger-May Allah bless him and (likewise) his family and Companions. And may He favor him and give him peace.

We have it from Abu Musa al-Ashari Radiyallaahu anhu that the Messenger of Allah Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam has said “A Muslim is he from whose tongue and hands other Muslims are Safe.” (Tirmizi, Book of Faith, Chapter 12)

1.     He is Not a True Muslim

This Hadith is transmitted by Sayyidina Abu Musa al-Ashari Radiyallaahu anhu and it implies that a Muslim is one who does not cause trouble to another Muslim by his tongue or by his hand. The hadith describes a Muslim and tells us that only he is a Muslim who has these attributes. Therefore, if other people are not safe from the hand or tongue of a Muslim then truly this man is not entitled to be called a Muslim. He is like one who does not offer Salat. Although no jurist will decide that such a man is a non-Muslim because he neglects regular Salat yet he is not truly entitled to be called a Muslim because he does not observe the most significant of the duties imposed by Allah. In the same way the person whose hand and tongue cause trouble to other people is not called a disbeliever by a jurist but, in the light of this Hadith, he is not entitled to be called a Muslim because he does not behave like one.

2.     What Is Social Living

There are five sections in Islam.

  1. Belief.
  2. Worship.
  3. Dealings or Behavior.
  4. Character and Manners; and
  5. Social living.

This Hadith is the base on which the fifth section stands. No one lives alone in this world; neither is he asked to live alone. So, he has links with someone or the other-his family, friends, neighbors, and other people, where he buys or sells or he works. How, then should he conduct himself with these people. This is the principle and rule of social living and it is a significant part of religion. Unfortunately, due to our negligence and irresponsible attitude that we have cast it aside and do not even consider it as part of religion. We do not pay heed to the commands of Allah and His Messenger Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam in this regard.

3.     Importance of Social Rules

Allah has given particular importance to social rules for us. We can see it in the way the Qur’an deals with one of the principles of social living: to seek permission before entering anybody’s house. The Arabic word for seeking permission is Istizan Allah has revealed two complete rukus

(Sections) in the Qur’an to describe istizan. We can gauge the importance attached to it from the fact that the command to offer Salat is discussed some sixty-two times in the Qur’an but it is left to the Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam to describe how to offer it. The Qur’an does not tell us the method of offering it. But, details of istizan are mentioned by the Qur’an itself and not left for the Prophet # to describe. Besides, a large portion of surah al-Hujurat is devoted to social laws. Thus, on the one hand such a great importance is attached to social conduct and on the other we ignore that in our daily life and do not even know its rules.

4.     Maulana Thanavi (Rahmatullahi Alaih) Revives Rules of Social Way of Living

In his times, Allah has caused Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih to revive those sections of religion that had been put in the background. People had forgotten that these were part of our religion. Maulana Thanavi recalled their significance and taught us their rules .It was in his khanqah that he gave it practical shape. It was supposed previously that a khanqah is a recluse: people sit in rooms and chant ‘Allah’ ‘Allah’ and occupy themselves in zikr (remembrance of Allah, devotional exercises) and worship. Maulana Thanavi did not lay as much emphasis on zikr and optional worship as he placed on social conduct. He educated his disciples to avoid inconveniencing other people. He used to say that when his disciples failed to observe the devotional exercises that he prescribed, he felt sorry for their dereliction but when he learnt of one of them violating social conduct or causing hardship to someone he felt hatred for that man.

5.     First Become a Human Being

It is known, too, that Maulana Thanavi Rahmatullahi Alaih frequently said, “If you wish to become a Sufi or an ascetic then you will find many other khanqahs for that purpose where you may go. If you wish to perfect yourself as a human being, you should come here. We mold them here. To become a Muslim, a Scholar or a Sufi is the next step and it is a higher status. You must first enter the human field, and come out of the rows of animals. You can only achieve that by learning the Islamic etiquettes of social living and behaving according to them.”

6.     Three Types of Animals

In his ahya ul Ulum, Imam Ghazali Rahmaatullahi alaih has said that Allah has created three types of animals. One of these types are beneficial to mankind and it is very rare that they harm man. Examples of this type are: cows, sheep, and so on. They are beneficial because they give milk and when they do not, they are slaughtered for their meat; that is, they give up their lives to benefit man. These animals do not harm anybody. The second type includes animals that are always harmful to man and there is no apparent benefit from them. Examples of this kind are snakes, scorpions, beasts of prey, and so on; they are all harmful animals. They bite man. The third kind of animals are those animals that neither benefit nor harm. These are found in the wild and include fox, jackal, and others. Man does not gain from them nor is harmed by them to a noticeable extent. After recalling these types of animals, Imam Ghazali Rahmatullahi Alaih addresses man and says, “O Man! You are the Best creation and you enjoy excellence over all animals. If you do not behave as a human being but wish to live as an animal then at least imitate the first kind of animal who benefits other creatures but does not harm them, like the cow and goat. But, if you wish to stoop lower then become like the third type that neither harms nor benefits. If you are not like either of these and cause harm to other people instead of benefitting them then you have grouped with the second type of snakes and scorpions, and the like.”

7.     They Are Human Beings

So we see that the question of Muslim or non-Muslim, scholar or not, ascetic or not, is not of immediate import. The first thing for a man is to behave like humans. To do that it is necessary that he tread the Islamic Social way of living. He should not be responsible for causing even the slightest of inconvenience to anyone else, by his hand or tongue or through any effort whatever. Once Maulana Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih said in a spirit of humbleness, “Even I am not a perfect and complete human but-praise be to Allah – I have seen what human beings are like. So I cannot be deceived by a bull who claims to be human. So I will aim at that, Inshaa Allah, and will not be deceived into behaving like a bull”.

8.     Save Other People from Harm

As far as voluntary devotional exercises are concerned, no one will be taken to task for omitting these forms of worship but if anyone observes them, he will be rewarded for that in the Hereafter. Nevertheless, these are virtuous deeds, and one must accustom oneself to do them. On the other hand, if anyone is behind the hardship another person suffers then he has committed a grave sin and he will be taken to task for that commission. This is why Shari’ah tells us to abandon voluntary worship when there is a possibility of helping someone out of difficulty or saving him from that.

9.     Importance of Congregational Salat

We know that men are urged strongly to offer their obligatory Salat with the congregation. It is so important that the Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said, “I feel like appointing someone else to lead the congregational Salat when the time comes and go out myself to visit every house and see if anyone has stayed behind. Then, I should set the houses of those who remained behind a fire because they neglect their duties to Allah.” This shows the importance attached to congregational Salat. Some of the jurist regard offering Salat with the congregation as sunnah muwakkadah but some othres give it the higher status of wajib. Prayer in congregational form is a perfect form while in an individual capacity is an imperfect form. We also have the example of the Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam when he was ill before his death and could not walk with ease and had appointed Sayyidina Abu Bakr Radiyallahu anhu as Imam in his place. At such a moment too, he came to the mosque to offer the congregational prayer supported by two men. This stresses the importance of Salat with the congregation.

10.            When Is One Not Allowed To Go To The Mosque?

The jurists have decided unanimously that a man who is ill and smells badly then he must not go to the Mosque. It is not merely that he is allowed to stay away from congregational prayer but he is not even allowed to join it, and if he joins it, he will be committing a sin. If he joins the congregation, he will inconvenience other people because of the bad odor. We must see that such an important thing as congregational Salat is disallowed if it becomes a cause of inconvenience to other people.

11.            Causing Hardship to other People When Kissing the Black Stone

We all know the importance of the Hajr Aswad (the Black Stone, at Ka’bah). We are told that kissing the Black Stone is like shaking hands with Allah, and it effaces a man’s sins. The Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam and his companions Radiyallahu anhum themselves kissed the Black Stone which also highlights its importance. In spite of that we are advised that if in attempting to kiss it we might push other people and cause them difficulty then it is not proper to kiss it; rather that is sinful. Shariah is very particular that one does not cause another man even a little bit of difficulty. Such important forms of worship as congregational Salat and kissing the Hajr Aswad are abandoned only because we might not hurt anyone else; thus, the lesser forms that are voluntary should also be postponed when such a situation arises.

12.            Reciting the Qur’an Loudly

We may cite the example of reciting the Qur’an, too. It is such a virtuous act that the reciter is rewarded tenfold on reciting each letter. In other words a person amasses rewards when he recites the Qur’an. Of all the devotional exercises, recital of the Qur’an is the most excellent. Then, an audible recital is preferred. An audible recital secures more reward than an inaudible. But, if there is a likelihood of disturbing someone’s sleep because of the sound then it is not allowed to recite audibly.

13.            How did the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam Arise for Tahajjud Salat

The Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam woke up in the night for Tahajjud Salat. Never in his life did he miss the Tahjjud Salat. But, Allah and His Messenger Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam made it easy for us and did not say that the Tahajjud Salat was obligatory for us although it was so for the Messenger of Allah sallallaahu alaihi wasallam. He never missed it. In spite of that we are told in a Hadith that whenever he got up for Tahajjud he was very quiet and never made a noise or let the door squeak lest the sleep of any of his wives be disturbed. The Qur’an and Hadith tell us that we must not cause the slightest difficulty to anyone.

14.            Praying On the Thoroughfare

It is not proper to offer prayer at a place where people pass by. Some people do not heed this. Take for example the mosque. Although the front rows are vacant, some people pick up the very last row and offer their Salat there. The result is that those who have to go out of the mosque or come into it, find it difficult. Either they make a detour round such people or commit a sin by walking in front of them. To offer Salat in such a manner is not proper. Rather, it is a sin.

15.            ‘Muslim’ includes Security

The Hadith we are discussing may be repeated here “A Muslim is one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are secure”. The word Muslim is an Arabic word whose root is seen lam meem which is also the root word of the word meaning security. Thus implied security or safety is included in the word Muslim.

16.            The meaning of as-salam ‘Alaikum

When non-Muslims meet they greet each other with a ‘hello’, ‘good morning1, namstay or ‘adab’. They have different words of greetings, but, the Islamic form of greeting is as-salam ‘alykum meaning Peace be on you. Apart from greeting, these words offer a prayer for the safety of the person greeted whereas every other form of greeting does not include any prayer. The addressee receives no benefit thereby. But when a man greets the other with as-salam ‘alay kum Wa rahmat Allah Wa barkatuhu he prays for three blessings as we see in the meaning of these words: Peace be on you and the Mercy of Allah and His Favors. This is a supplication and if it receives the approval of Allah even once, the person addressed benefits for the rest of his life from the blessings. Besides, by using these words the addressee is assured of safety and security at the hands of the speaker. The former is then confident that he will not suffer hardship through the latter. A Muslim, when he greets in this way, conveys to the other that he has brought the message of peace for him and will not torment him.

17.            The Meaning of Security from the Tongue

The Hadith describes a Muslim as one from whose tongue and hand other Muslims are safe. To be safe from the tongue is to be satisfied that he will not say anything that might dishearten the other, cause him difficulty or displease him in any way. So, even when that man is to be censored such words may be used as do not cause heart-burning. For instance, he must be told in simple terms that his action was not proper or that he must re-consider his behavior or that it was not in line with Shari ah. He must not be cursed or taunted. Anything said in an indirect manner that injures is taunt and it causes a deep wound. The Arabic couplet further explains:

“The wound caused by the sword heals sooner

or later but when it is caused by the tongue it

leaves a lasting impression”.

It is better, therefore, to tell anyone plainly that he has wronged rather than taunt him. The Qur’an says:-

O you who believe! Fear Allah and speak words straight to the point (Al-Ahzab. 3370)

Indirect speech is neither desired nor liked. In the present times, we are used to oblique references and round about approach. The listener is hurt by that. People who speak in this manner gain the appreciation of the masses and are said to possess good sense of humor as an orator.

18.            A Unique Incident of Oblique Speech

Someone wrote an article in which he commented on one of the books of Maulana Mahmud ul Hasans Rahmatullahi alaih while making the comments he called the Maulana an infidel or unbeliever. One of the sincere disciples of the Maulana retaliated by citing a literary Persian poem

which, by today’s standards, was a high-ranking criticism with a taunting bent. The poem was (translation)

If you call me an infidel, it pains me not,

Because the light of falsehood never kindles.

You have called me an infidel. In answer, I

call you a Muslim, Because falsehood can only

be repulsed with falsehood.

This means that you have lied by calling me an infidel, so I lie by calling you a Muslim or that ‘you are not a Muslim’. A poet or a literary person would applaud such a response because it is a biting literary reply. The second poet starts by calling him a Muslim but he clarifies his statement when he says that a lie is responded with a like lie. ‘You spoke a lie by calling me an infidel so I speak a lie by calling you a Muslim’. When this man presented his poem to the Maulana, he commented, “You have composed an excellent poem but you have turned the table on him and called him an unbeliever which is not our approach. We do not call anyone a disbeliever.” So, he did not send the poem to the man who had criticized him. Then, the Maulana revised that poem and made an addition, too. He wrote (translation)

If you have called me an infidel, it pains me not

because the light of falsehood never shines. In

answer, I call you a Muslim and instead of the

sour dose, I feed you sugar. If you are a believer

it is indeed very good. But if you aren’t then the

recompense of falsehood is always falsehood.

Ponder over it! That man labels him an infidel, so consigns him to Hell. But, the Maulana could not tolerate even a sentence of biting language against that man which would transgress the limits. Such unseemly language would be used here in this world. We will have to account in the Hereafter for the tongue’s utterance. “Why had we used such a word for another person? Therefore, we must exercise care and speak plainly and say exactly what we mean.

19.            An Incident about a Biting Tongue

My respected father, Maulana Mufti Muhammad Shafi Rahmatullahi alaih used to say that some people have a biting tongue. Such people will always taunt or raise objections. Such behavior causes heart burns. My father narrated an incident to support his point. A man visited a relative. When he went there he found the daughter-in-law of the house very angry. She was speaking rudely to her mother-in-law who was seated nearby. The man asked the elder woman what had angered her daughter-in-law. She said, “There’s nothing, I spoke only two words of reproach and am being punished for that. She is running wild since then and is very angry.” The man asked her what it was that she had spoken and she said, “I only said that her father was a slave and her mother was a slave. Since then she is wild with anger.” Look at that! Those were only two words according to the elder woman. But, they were such words as irritate a person. Taunting words ruin families and create hatred among family members. We must keep away from using them. We must always speak clearly and in a straightforward way.

20.            We must think before we speak

Before we speak anything, we must ponder over the consequence and on how the other person would take it. We must also see how these very words we wish to speak to other people would be received by us if they were spoken to us. The Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam has taught us the principle:

“Prefer for other people what you prefer for yourself. (Tirmizi, Book of Az-zahd (piety))

The Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam has put an end to the setting up of two standards, one for ourselves and one for the others. If Allah grows this attitude in our hearts then we will be free of all the bickering and hatred that we see around us.

21.            The tongue is a great Blessing

The tongue that man has is one of the great blessings of Allah on him. We are enjoying its gratis and it works round the clock from birth to death. We can only understand its value if we imagine ourselves without it. Those who are down with paralysis and cannot speak; they try their best but cannot utter a word. They wish to convey their inner feelings to their dear ones but cannot do so and it is then that they realize the value of the tongue. But, we use this blessing of Allah from morning to evening, day in and day out, like a sharp weapon without thinking for a moment what words we utter with it. This is very wrong. The correct thing is to weigh out words before we speak. If we do that then instead of being a means to deliver us to Hell, the tongue will take us to Heaven and amass for us a wealth for use in the Hereafter, Inshaa Allah.

22.            Let Us Accustom Ourselves to Think Before We Speak

We are told in a Hadith that it is mainly the tongue that will be responsible for flinging its owner face down into Hell. Therefore, we must think before we speak. This does not mean that a man should wait for some time during which he thinks before saying something but when he accustoms himself to think before speaking then he will do it spontaneously. Allah then makes his tongue value its words before it utters them and it will only utter the correct words, never the wrong ones that displease Allah and hurt other people.

23.            Maulana Thanavi’s Case

There was an attendant of Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih. He was called Bhai Niaz. He was a very cossetted servant and even visitors of the Maulana loved him. He made himself felt by exercising authority on visitors to the khanqah always giving instructions and he was aided in this behavior by the strict system that ruled the khanqah. One of his disciples complained to the Maulana about this man’s behavior and told him that he was a rude man who scolds many visitors. The Maulana did not like that so he summoned Bhai Niaz and reproached him for his rude behaviour and wished to know why he did that. In answer, Bhai Niaz said, “Maulana, fear Allah. Don’t lie!”.  He was not addressing these words to Maulana Thanavi but he had meant to refer to those who had brought about the complaint. They should fear Allah and not lie. On hearing him, the Maulana lowered his head and went away from there saying, “Astaghfir-Allah (I seek Allah’s forgiveness.)” Those who saw this happen were surprised that a menial could speak in this manner to the Maulana who instead of taking him to task for that went away saying AstaghfirAllah. Later on, the Mawalana explained that he had erred in scolding Bhai Niaz without first giving him an opportunity to explain and that is why he had said AstaghfirAllah. The Shariah directs us to allow the accused to defend himself. The truth is that when Allah gives someone the power to recognize truth from falsehood he takes care not to exceed the limits. May Allah give us also such an understanding! Aameen.

24.            It is not proper To Hurt a Non-Muslim Too

Some people suppose that this Hadith excludes the non-Muslims from its application because it defines a Muslim as one who does not hurt another Muslim with his tongue or hand. They contend that the Hadith does not disallow us to hurt a non-Muslim. They are mistaken in thinking so. Muslims are mentioned in the Hadith because generally they live in a Muslim surrounding and have to deal with each other, otherwise the scope of the Hadith extends equally to Muslims and non-Muslims. It is not allowed to cause inconvenience to a non-Muslim too in times of peace. Nevertheless, when Muslims are at war with the infidels then it is a part of the activity to hurt them in pursuance of the objective to diminish their status; but it is not allowed to hurt those unbelievers who are not engaged in war with the Muslims.

25.            Evidence In Support Of This Statement

We find evidence to support our contention in the case of Hazrat Musa Alaihissalam who lived under the rule of the Pharoah in Egypt where everyone was a disbeliever except Hazrat Musa Alaihissalam. It happened that an Isra’ili and a Qubti (copt) were engaged in quarrel. Hazrat Musa Alaihissalam slapped the Qubti who died because of it. Although the man was an unbeliever, Hazrat Musa Alaihissalam considered himself a sinner because he had inadvertently brought about his death.

And they have a crime against me; so I fear they Will Slay me. (Ash-Shuara. 26:14) 

Hazrat Musa Alaihissalam considered the inadvertent killing of the unbeliever to be a sin. The question arises that the man was an unbeliever and slaying the unbelievers is an act of Jihad, then why did Hazrat Musa Alaihissalam call it a sin and sought the forgiveness of Allah for that? The answer is that although the Qubti was a non-Muslim, in times of peace when Muslims and non-Muslims live together the rights enjoyed by Muslims and non-Muslims are similar so that just as it is wrong to hurt a Muslim so too it is wrong to hurt an unbeliever. It pertains to-human rights and the first duty of a man is that he acts like a human being and thereafter he many become a Muslim and a Sufi. It is part of human behavior that he refrains from causing inconvenience to anyone else without distinction of Muslims and non-Muslims.

26.            To Retract On a Promise Is Like Hurting the Other Person with the Tongue

There are certain things that are the same as hurting with the tongue but some people do not consider them in this way. An example is to go back on one’s promise. If anybody assures another person that he will be with him at a certain time or do a certain task for him at the agreed time and then fails to do it then that person to whom the promise was made faces difficulty. The man who had given out the assurance commits the sin of failing to keep his promise and also the sin of causing inconvenience to the other man. This is a form of hurting someone with the tongue.

27.            Greetings while the Qur’an is recited

Sometimes, we do not realize that we are hurting someone with our tongue. We suppose that we are being virtuous but actually we are being sinful because our behavior is causing difficulty to someone else. For instance, to greet another person with as-salamu-‘alay-kum is an excellent thing and rewarding too. But, Shari ah has seen to it that when others are liable to be inconvenienced, the greetings must not be exchanged; it has given instructions on this matter. In fact, on some occasions instead of being rewarding it is sinful to offer greetings to another person. If a man is reciting the Qur’an then he must not be saluted. The salutation will interrupt him and he will have to stop the recital and turn towards the person greeting him which is an inconvenience to him. So, the greeting causes him difficulty with the tongue. In the same way, it is not allowed to salute those already sitting in the mosque because they are remembering Allah, and are engaged in devotional exercises. They have the name of Allah on their lips and they will be disturbed if anybody salutes them.

28.            Greetings When a Meeting Is In Progress

The jurists opine that when someone speaks to other people who listen to him attentively then a new-comer must not salute them even if they are talking about worldly matters. Those people were attentive to the speaker and their attention would be diverted if anyone interrupts them with the salutation. The interruption would be in bad taste. Thus, we are commanded that when we go to an Assembly and the proceedings are on then we must sit down quietly without offering the salams. A salutation at that time will be like hurting them with the tongue. It may be gauged from this principle how very particular Shariah is in forbidding us from inconveniencing other people.

29.            Salutations to One Who Is Eating

Although it is not disallowed to salute a person who is eating his food, it is certainly a disliked behavior to do so if that person is likely to be inconvenienced. That person is not engaged in worship but only eating his food so if anyone salutes him, the mountains will not fall down on him. However, there is a possibility of being disturbed and feeling bad when someone salutes at such a time. In the same way, if someone is seen to hurry along somewhere, it is not correct for us to salute him and extend the hand for a handshake. One must understand by the way he was walking he must be in a hurry. It was not a proper time to salute him and shake hands with him. He should have been allowed to go where he was going. The salutation at such times is like hurting other people.

30.            Prolonging Conversation on the Phone

My respected father Rahmatullahi alaih used to say that telephone is also an instrument through which other people may be harmed. Rather, it is a tool that may be used to create unlimited hardships to other people. Thus, if anyone rings another person and engages him in a long conversation without even considering that he might have been busy in some other task then he is causing him inconvenience. My father, Mufti Muhammad Shafi Rahmatullahi alaih has commented in the Ma’ariful Qur’an that before the caller engages in a long conversation he must let the called person know his intention and ask him if he has that much time or should he call later. He Rahmatullahi alaih has said that this is part of etiquettes of telephonic conversation, and he has defined the long conversation as spanning over five minutes! This is mentioned in the interpretation of surah an-Nur and my father was very particular in observing it.

31.            Use of Loudspeakers

Another example of causing hardship by the tongue is the misuse of the loudspeaker in the mosque. If a few people are to be addressed within the mosque perhaps the internal loudspeaker would suffice. But, if the external loudspeaker is also used then the entire neighborhood is compelled to listen to the address. Some of these people may be reciting the Qur’an or occupied in other tasks or resting. Someone may be ill, they are all subjected to hardship by the tongue.

32.            An Incident of the Times of Hazrat Umar Radhiyallahu anhu

In the times of Hazrat Umar Faruq Sayyidna someone used to come to the Masjid Nabavi and deliver sermons. The abode of Hazrat Aishah Radhiyallahu Anha was just next to the Masjid Nabavi. Although there were no loudspeakers in those days yet this man’s voice was loud and could be heard by Hazrat Radhiyallahu Anha in her room while she was occupied in different household chores or some form of worship like the recital of the Qur’an. She sent a message to Hazrat Umar Radhiyallahu Anhu that this person delivered sermons near her house in a loud voice which disturbed her. She requested that this man may be asked to deliver his sermons elsewhere or subdue his voice. Hazrat Umar Radhiyallahu Anhu summoned the man and explained to him that his behavior annoyed the Mother of the faithful, Hazrat Aishah Radhiyallahu Anha; so he must discontinue his preaching there. That man obeyed and discontinued his preaching for some days. After a few days, however, he again continued his sermons. When Hazrat Umar Radhiyallahu Anhu was informed of that, he summoned him again and warned him that if he did not cease he would smash his rod on him. That is, he would beat him with the rod until it broke up.

33.            Our Behavior Today

If we look at our behavior today we have set aside these principles. If someone is delivering an address in the mosque, he torments the locality around him. The loudspeaker blares at full volume and nobody in the neighborhood is allowed to sleep or rest. If anyone asks them to lower the volume, they taunt him that he is preventing religious effort although it is the speaker in the mosque and the responsible men there who violate the principles of Shariah. They are responsible for the hardship other people suffer. The truth is that it is part of the etiquette of a religious scholar (‘Alim) that he keeps his voice only that high as his audience can listen to him. The voice of an Alim must not go beyond his listeners. Violation of these principles amounts to causing hardship with the tongue. Allah has blessed us with this tongue that we may remember Allah with it, we may convey the truth and we may soothe the hearts of other people but not that we may hurt them.

34.            A Woman of Hell

A Hadith tells us that the Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam was asked about a woman who fasted during the days and kept vigil in the night but she was rude to her neighbors. The Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam said that the woman would go to Hell. Maulana Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih says in explanation of the Hadith “People must not be put to difficulty unnecessarily and this is more important than individul worship.” That is, fair dealing with other people takes precedence over worship. Maulana Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih then says that the question of mutual dealings has been shelved these days and no one even tries to explain what it means arid what we are required to do in this regard.

35.            Causing Hardship with the Hand

The second thing that the Hadith under discussion calls for is to refrain from hurting anyone with the hand. Sometimes it is very obvious that we are putting someone to hardship, for example when we beat him. But sometimes we put him to hardship but our society does not think of that in those terms, although there are So many ways in which we may cause hardship to another person. By mentioning the hand, the Hadith includes all the deeds performed by man because he performs most of them by his hand. The Ulama include all the deeds performed by man whether he uses his hands for that or not.

36.            To Put Something Out Of Place

We can give the example of people living together. There are many things of common use, for instance towel, utensils, soap and so on. If one member uses any of these things and then does not replace it at its proper place, the others are inconvenienced when they have to look for it here and there. The first person is responsible for the inconvenience and it is a hardship to which the others are put which the Hadith forbids us to do.

37.            A Grave Sin

My father taught us even those things which we consider trifle. When we were young we too would commit such mistakes. We would use something and then misplace it and, not finding it at its proper place, he would have to search for it. He told us once that apart from being bad manners, it was a grave sin not to put something back at its proper place after use. This misdeed causes inconvenience to a Muslim and it is a grave sin to do that. Before that we had not known that it was a grave sin to put anything at a wrong place. This was an example of hurting anyone with the hand.

38.            Causing Hardship to Family and Relatives

It must be understood that the foregoing does not presuppose that those with whom we live together are strangers alone. They could be our family members and relatives too. Generally, we do not feel that we are causing hardship to our close relatives like wife, children, brothers and sisters; some people say that it does not matter if these relatives suffer hardship because they are relatives, after all. This is a wrong approach. It is not the fault of those people that they are our relatives that we cause them hardship. We must remember that our beloved Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam woke up for Tahajjud Salat and was very quiet in everything that he did lest he disturb Hazrat Aishah Radhiyallahu anha in her sleep. So, just as we are forbidden to cause hardship to strangers so too we must not cause hardship to the folk of our homes and our relatives.

39.            To stay away At the Times of Meals

For instance, it is a grave sin for a man to be away from home at the times of meal after assuring his family members that he will be there and have his meal with them so they are kept waiting and wondering where he is. It often happens that such a man does not worry about his family members or his commitment and eats out while they wait for him. He is committing a grave sin in this manner because he hurts someone whom Allah has joined to him in marital relations. Such a man must inform his family members if he is delayed so that they are at rest concerning him. But people do not think of it from this angle because a wife is supposed to be a subordinate and she may be put to inconvenience, although it is wrong and forbidden, and a grave sin to do so.

40.            It Is Forbidden To Dirty the Thoroughfare

Another example of hurting someone by the hand is to throw something on a thoroughfare, a banana peel or any dirty thing. The passers-by will suffer because of that or someone may slip and fall down when he puts his fool on it. The person who is responsible for that will be answerable on the Day of Resurrection for his misdeed. Even if no passer-by is inconvenienced yet because of dirtying the thoroughfare the person throwing it will have committed a sin. We are told about the Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam that whenever he was travelling and felt the urge to urinate, he would search for a proper place to do it in the same manner one looks out for a place to build his house. He did this to avoid dirtying a pathway and thus causing the passers-by an inconvenience. The Holy Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam has said, “Faith has over seventy branches, the most excellent of these is to declare the kalimah, “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah”. And the humblest form is to remove offensive and injurious things from the thoroughfare.” These things could be a thorn or a peel and their removal is the most minor form of faith. Thus when removal of injurious things from the road is a branch of faith the throwing of such things on the road could be a branch of disbelief.

41.            It Is Forbidden To Cause Mental Agony to Any one

Maulana Thanavi Rahmathullahi alaih has said that the Hadith under discussion refers to actions of the tongue and hand but it also includes any action by the tongue or hand that causes someone else a mental agony. For instance, if a man borrows money from someone and promises to return

it at a certain date then he must return it by that day. If he cannot repay the sum borrowed on the promised day then he must request for more time but he must not try to fool the lender and cause him mental torture. Let not the lender keep waiting for the debtor to make an appearance so that the poor fellow cannot make a proper planning because he does not know when he will get back his money.

42.            Agonizing One’s Servants

Maulana Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih goes so far as to say that a person must not at once ask his servant to do more than one task in sequence. In this way, the master frees himself of remembering the tasks but shifts the responsibility of remembering them on his servant. If it is not necessary to do so then the servant must not be burdened with the responsibility to remember. He must be asked to finish a task and when he is through, he should be given the next task, and so on in this manner. The Maulana said about himself that he always followed this method. After his servant finished one task, he instructed him to do the other and then the next. The Maulana said, “I remember the duties my servant has to be instructed with and I do not shift the burden to his memory. He is thus not under a mental pressure. He knows that when he has completed one assignment, I will instruct him with the next.” The Maulana Rahmatullahi alaih was a far-sighted man.

43.            Where Should One Wait for a Worshipper Engaged In Salat

Continuing with examples of how one does inconvenience other people, we may cite the case of a man waiting for another who is offering his Salat. Such a man must not sit next to the worshipper so that he senses that the man is waiting for him and his attention is diverted into hurrying through the Salat. The worshipper feels he must not keep the man waiting so hurries through the postures of prayer. The proper thing for the man who is waiting is to wait at some distance so that the worshipper is not disturbed and offers his Salat peacefully. He” may meet him after he finishes his Salat without knowing that someone was waiting for him. The first method of sitting next to the worshipper making him realize that someone waits for him is wrong. It causes him mental agony. Al Hamdulillah, our elders and teachers applied themselves equally to all branches of religion. They did not take up one or two branches and exclude the rest, the Qur’an says

O you who believe! Enter completely into Islam (Al Baqarah. 2:208)

Let it not be that you, O Believers! Pay attention to the branch of worship like Salat, Fasting and so on, but by-pass social conduct, fair dealing and good manners as prescribed in Islam.

44.            Adab ul Mu ‘ashirat

Maulana Thanavi Rahmatullahi alaih has composed a small book in Urdu by the name of Adabul Mu ashirat. It is worth reading. The Maulana Rahmatullahi alaih has stated in the book that he could not write down all the social etiquettes in the book but he has nevertheless collected there in as many as he could recollect. He has suggested that the reader would read the book and go on behaving as the book wants him to behave and gaining knowledge of all the social etiquettes as prescribed by Islam. Allah will open up his mind for him. Thus it is a part of social manners that a man may park his car in such a way that no one else is obstructed; it is also part of religion. We have forgotten these things today and are, therefore, sinful. At the same time we present a wrong picture of religion. Anyone looking at us would say that we are regular at Salat but careless in cleanliness and quick at causing hardship to other people. We must try to think what picture of Islam our behavior presents to a non-Muslim, would he be attracted to it after observing us? Or, would he be repelled? May Allah guide us! Instead of behaving as good specimens of Muslims, and inviting other people to Islam by our conduct, we have become instrumental in turning them away from Islam. We have paid scant attention to the branch of social manners.

May Allah cause us not to be neglectful in this regard-myself and everyone else. May He inspire us to comprehend correctly and to conduct ourselves fairly on all branches of religion. Aameen

And our concluding prayer is: “Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds!”.

Reforming the inner is indeed difficult

The pious elders didn’t pay much attention to the outwardly deeds as their reformation can be done in a minute with a mere change of intention. A be-namaazi (one who does not pray) can start praying in a minute, a beardless man can start growing the beard in a minute, a drunkard can give up drinking in a minute. A faasiq and a faajir can become pious in a minute. It was the akhlaaq of one’s inner-self such as getting rid of kibr (pride) etc. to which they paid more attention for certainly it is a very difficult task. The reformation of inner-self from spiritual diseases such as hub-e-jah (love for name and fame), kibr, jealousy, high thinking of oneself, rancor, the desire for praise etc. is very difficult. When a be-namaazi gets a righteous environment will start to pray tahajjud salah even in masjid-un-Nabawi but it is not guaranteed that one’s kibr leaves his heart this easily. A man gets the environment of Makka mukarrama and he will reach the masjid even before the prayer commences but this does not mean he will get rid of jealousy and rancor in his heart in a same manner. It is not easy to end the quest for fame and worldly things. So one can change his outer appearance quickly but the spiritual diseases goes away with time as a person keeps going on the spiritual path. In fact the weight of a person’s outer deeds solely depends on his inner self. The more his heart is clean, heavier will be his outer deeds and there will be more noor. A man is fortunate to get rid of his spiritual diseases.

A person might be establishing tahajjud salah but have rancor in his heart and have love for the world. The love for world does not necessarily mean the love for wealth but it also comprises the love for honor, fame and praises. There is a widespread disease in our society today and that is to praise the person on his face. This is like slaughtering him with a sharp knife. A person can be worthless but on continuously hearing praises he thinks high of himself. In order to get the job done, some praise others with big words making him to feel great of himself. Such an environment is expanding now. This is a disease where a person yearns for praises and he starts getting people surrounding him with praises. As far as the one who speaks the truth talking about his islaah, he won’t be in his company. Only those who falsely praise him sit with him. Our elders thus considered very easy to change the outer appearance of a person by surrounding him with a good environment that changes a be-namaazi to namaazi (the one who prays), a beardless man to a bearded man and a drunkard man into a non-alcoholic. How many come running towards masjid during the blessed environment of Ramadhan! But attaching a person’s heart to akhirah and to de-bond his heart with this dunya is very difficult. To get the zuhd of dunya and quest for akhirah takes time and with much difficulty one gets rid of spiritual diseases. Because of these inner diseases, the noor of the outer aamaal do not shine on the heart. Let Allah SWT protect us. Hubb e jhaa is said to be such a disease whose very presence is known with much difficulty. Only when you hear something related to it, you realize that you are afflicted with that disease. To know our quest for honor and fame is not so easy.

Be strict on your nafs

It has been said that to lower one’s gaze is difficult and if one violates this rule, he should pray 50 units of voluntary salah. Only if one is strict on his nafs and imposes severe penalty on it, it will reform. It is very important to protect one’s gaze. The following are the signs of one’s acceptance by Allah Azzawajal are: he holds correct religious beliefs, he is steadfast in doing aamaal, he keeps away from sins and he hates the world. Once a man came to the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam and asked him sallallaahu alaihi wasallam to show him such an amal by which he becomes beloved to Allah Azzawajal and also to the people. Our beloved Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam replied, “Do not love this world, you will become beloved to Allah Azzawajal and do not yearn for what people have or throw desirous look on their possessions, you will become beloved of people”. The sign of hard heartedness and rusted heart is no hatred for sins and no attachment to Allah’s obedience. Let Allah Azzawajal protect us. The hatred for sins is very essential because only then he can save himself from committing sins. A very effective way of saving oneself from such a state is to keep oneself away from the sinful environment. A man may not commit sins but if he keeps sitting in the sinful environment, he will reach a state when he will not hate the sins. This is like a person who lives in cow’s shed. After a time, he won’t sense the foul smell of cow dung. In fact when he is out of shed, he falls unconscious. When people tried to bring in him consciousness with different things, he didn’t gain any consciousness and when a man brought cow dung near his nose, he immediately woke up. Similarly when a person becomes accustomed to a sinful environment, not just he loses hatred for sins but he enjoys sinning. Let Allah Azzawajal protect us. When a person is in a righteous environment, Allah Azzawajal grants him the wealth of righteousness. How many of us are here who didn’t even know that we have such and such spiritual disease until Allah Azzawajal sent a man of clean heart to us and then we start feeling uneasiness of our sinful environment! People say we don’t have good intention and good perception but actually we have become just like how our environment was. So not having any hatred towards sins and desire to do obedient acts are a sign of hard heartedness. As I said before an effective way of coming out of it is to create a righteous environment around us and in case we are to go to the sinful environment to meet our needs, then try to move out of the place as fast as you could. If not it would become very difficult to sense the sins as he will start considering it to be something very normal by seeing that continuously around him.

Prefer health to voluntary acts

It has been said that one’s health should be prioritized over recommended or voluntary acts. For example, after fajr salah sitting in the masjid waiting for ishraaq salah is a voluntary act and accordingly you get reward. But if one’s health demands that he goes for a walk daily and he doesn’t get time for that except at this particular time, then going for walk in a corrupt free environment is better for him than doing the voluntary act. You can go to house and pray ishraaq. On one hand if you have voluntary acts and on the other hand your health, then take more care of your health. Preserving one’s health is better than recommended acts and going towards woods for a walk is better than sitting in masjid waiting for ishraaq with devotion. One can postpone the ishraaq and can even pray in house. We should give importance for health as we are weak people. You would have noticed that when you are healthy, you find pleasure in reading Quran and other voluntary acts, and one gets strength to do many righteous deeds. If one gets affected by health, he won’t even be able to do what he is doing already. If one has headache, hip pain etc. what can he do? Let health be taken care of. SubhanAllah! Our deen is very moderate but if you start understanding the deen in your own way, then it would look difficult.

Pay attention to only Allah’s pleasure

It has been said that the student of haqq is not bothered about others hostility as his main concern is Allah’s pleasure. One should not create enmity intentionally but if it happens while preaching the truth, then Allah Azzawajal is there for help. One should concentrate only on Allah’s pleasure. Most of the times it so happens that people’s displeasure saves one from many calamities. The friends might be displeased with you for becoming pious but the deen saves you from many calamities. So when I am indulged in pleasing Allah Azzawajal, then why should I care about the creatures’ displeasure? What can be more dangerous than the sin? And what can be more dangerous than the sinful environment? So if someone becomes angry while pleasing Allah Azzawajal, you should not worry. Who knows from how many sins you were saved! And from how many calamities you were saved! So you should not worry about it. We should only think that our Allah Azzawajal do not become displeased with us.

To summarize, three points have been emphasized. (1) To reform one’s outer appearance is easier than reforming the inner self from pride, jealousy etc. and in fact one gets divine help to perform more outer deeds when his heart gets purified. (2) The sign of hardheartedness is not feeling hatred towards the sins and affinity towards righteous deeds and (3) The student of Allah Azzawajal or the student of truth should care only about Allah’s pleasure and not the creatures’ pleasure. Let Allah Azzawajal help us all to act on what we hear, write and read. Ameen

How to get affinity towards doing good deeds

Do not follow your like or dislike towards the aamaal

If an act is compulsory, it has to be done if we like it or not. We cannot wait to do an act only when we have a feeling for it. The medicine has to be taken for sickness. It would be worshipping our heart if we wait for its desire to do an act. We should keep doing aamaal (good deeds) steadfastly irrespective of us being desirous or not. When this continues, attachment will develop towards that act. Attachment won’t happen just like that but it will develop over a time when amal is done regularly. Once we get this affinity we won’t feel good if we do not do that amal and start feeling uncomfortable until we do that act. This is just like the condition of an addicted person when he is deprived of his addiction. One can try enough to stop a person from his addicted thing but he keeps getting back to it. This is the affinity towards that addicted thing.

Stick to the aamaal

The attachment to good deeds happens but it takes time and happens only when we do that act regularly even if we like it or not. We should recite Quran regularly if we like it or not, we should do zikr if we like it or not. As time passes, one can get attachment to tahajjud salah that he would continue doing it for years and years. The barakah of steadfastness in every state of heart condition will lead to attachment to good deeds. The main problem today is people leave the acts when they don’t feel like doing and do acts only when they enjoy doing them. Allah SWT wants to see the quest in you. You just keep doing things. The knowledge and mercy is with Allah SWT and He SWT will definitely grant it. We should do our part by doing acts that will please Allah SWT and His Prophet SAW even if the whole world gets upset over those acts. The main specialty of doing this is, Allah SWT will bow the whole world and the necks of people before us. Over a time, the people of sound nature will automatically love this person and the pride of arrogant people will break apart.

Ease is followed by difficulty

The consequence of our hard work will be peace and the consequence of our exertion will be comfort. For indeed, with hardship will be ease. Indeed, with hardship will be ease. Al Quran: 94:5-6. Today you will exert yourself in doing aaamal and tomorrow that will become your comfort. Today you will be working hard on your aamal with difficulty but soon you will find a time when you will find peace and tranquility in the very same aaamal. Job will be done when you do the job. Do the job and the difficulties will get removed. We can’t keep thinking that we should become so righteous and very pious without doing acts and working hard towards it. We should do something if we want to lead a sinless and a righteous life. Job will be done by doing the job and not just by saying it. Take courage and work hard. The way of Allah SWT is that He SWT will grant ease after difficulty. Do not lose hope and keep fighting against your nafs and shaitan. Today we may have the heart to recite more ajza of Quran and we are reciting it and tomorrow we may not have the heart to recite but if we still force ourselves to recite it then that is mujaahidah, the struggle. It is on this struggle that Allah SWT promises us that He SWT will open up doors of guidance for us.

Be steadfast and the aamaal will show its barakah

A person aims to do aaamal for 41 days and he is finding it difficult to do on the 40th day and if he still does it, he would acquire noor on this single day that he may have attained for the entire 40 days because he did mujaahidah. Our case is we give up when we get such opportunities. The acts can be less but do it regularly and be steadfast even if our hearts do not yearn for them. When a small drop of water keeps falling on the rock continuously, it will create an impression on the rock. On the other hand even if open up the entire tank of water on the rock at once, there won’t be any impression. Benefit will be seen in those acts done constantly. When we fix ourselves to do certain acts regularly, we will definitely find mujaahidah in it as sometimes we may not find any longing towards it and still might be doing it and it is on this we would get the reward and the progress.

Job will be done by doing the job and not just by yearning and desiring for it. Our case is we are so in need of doing good deeds that our aim and outcome of doing good deeds are doing good deeds itself. Our aim is to get the tawfeeq (divine help) to do good deeds. So unless we are doing aamaal we won’t get anything. Unless we really pay due care for the salah and have the concern that we are standing before Allah SWT, we can’t excel our salah. Unless we pay attention to wudhu, we cannot excel our salah. Just hearing and wanting from the heart won’t help us but we should actually work on the deeds. When we continuously do the acts, the act itself will make the barakah prominent. When the acts are done with continuance and proper conditions the acts will themselves display their reality of existence and their barakah becomes apparent and one will realize it. Some people ask what is the wisdom behind doing certain amals? Keep doing amals, the wisdom behind those amals will themselves disclose before you. You will find its barakah all by yourself. You just do the job and give importance for the aamaal.

Something is better than nothing

We should definitely think that our aamaal are not perfect but at the same time we should know that doing something is better than doing nothing. Definitely we should realize that our salah, recitation is not oustanding but we should also know that something is better than nothing. We should not lose hope because yesterday we were not even doing that and today we are doing something and we should be grateful for it. The shaitan takes us to one of the two extremes. Either he gives us so much of hope that we stop worrying about improving our deeds or make us so despair of hope that we give up doing the acts that we are already doing. We should have both fear and hope altogether. We should have the concern that our aamaal is not good enough and we keep trying to improve it. At the same time we should be grateful from heart that Allah SWT has granted us tawfeeq to do the aamaal whatever we are doing. What if we do not even do that? So we should definitely think that our aamaal are deficient but at the same think we should think that something is better than nothing.

You may not have 1 rupee to buy some sweets in the market but if you have just 50 paise then you take that to the market because if not 1 rupee 50 paise will do as it has its value and will be accepted. You may not get too many sweets but will get at least half of it. So whatever aamaal you are doing, you may not get too many rewards but you will get some rewards. Let there be no hope in giving up the aamaal. Do not give up the salaah if thoughts keep coming up in your salah. If you feel you do not have enough concentration in zikr and want to give up and start again when you get concentration, then that is never going to happen. If a person thinks to drive the motorcycle only when he drives perfectly, will he ever learn to drive perfectly? You will drive perfectly only you keep driving. You will sit on the motorcycle, sometimes you might fall off, face something else and only then you will learn to drive perfectly right? It can never happen that you will drive only when you will drive well. Similarly you should work on your aamaal and at the same time you should also have concern to improve it and also you should be grateful from the heart to Allah SWT for whatever aamaal you are doing.

Keep doing and keep getting

Man should never lose hope and should have good opinion about Allah SWT. Allah SWT treats His slave as per his opinion about Him SWT. Yes Allah SWT is very Merciful and Generous but He SWT wants to see the quest in you and how much you are putting the efforts. Keep doing whatever you can and then Allah SWT will treat you by His SWT grace. So keep doing without losing hope. You will fall but stand up, you will fall but stand up and keep doing. Don’t give up. Allah SWT won’t criticize or ignore someone’s hard work and quest. There is a saying, “Keep doing and keep getting”. He SWT will never disappoint you. Strange is the court of Allah SWT. A person can do as many sins he wants but when he turns to Him SWT, everything changes upside down in just one minute. The condition is one should turn to Him SWT with khuloos (sincerity). He SWT is such a Generous Lord. So keep doing. Yeah we accept we are deficient, imperfect and aamaal are not good but keep doing. Do not give up. Let there be just this quest in you that you should acquire the pleasure of Allah SWT. “I want to lead a life pleasing to You SWT. I want to live for You and die for You”. Let this be the true passion in you. So do it as much as you can and stick to it. inshaaAllah Allah SWT will grant you the goal.

Be a critic and be humble

Just turn to Him SWT will sincerity and resolution. If a person never mentioned the name of Allah SWT and spent his entire life only in sins, even for him the doors of Allah’s mercy are open. Whatever is difficult for the slave, it is very easy for Allah SWT. So how can one lose hope in Allah SWT? When Allah’s Mercy shows up then all the dirt of the life gets cleansed but for that quest is the condition. There is no doubt when Allah’s mercy turns to us the dirt of sins of our entire life gets cleansed off but for that turning of Allah’s mercy we should have the true quest.  O Allah! I want to become Your’s and be Your’s. That’s it. It is within the ability of human to bring this quest and Allah SWT has made him responsible for that. So do what is within your ability. Hazrat Gangohi (RA) says that when a person works hard on himself with true quest that he become Allah’s throughout his life and feels that he didn’t achieve anything, then know that he has achieved everything. There are no major sins in his life, no persistence in minor sins and when he sees his good deeds, he finds it defective but has a true quest, then inshaaAllah he will achieve everything. Allah SWT has granted Hazrat Gangohi (RA) a very high status among akaabir (the pious elders) and he was called as the faqih-an-nafs. (Faqih an-Nafs” is among the terminology used by the fuqaha [jurists]. It refers to that person, who after long engagement with the science of fiqh, is granted by Allah Almighty a natural disposition with which one is able to come to correct conclusions [in matters of fiqh] without referring to books.)

Do not give up

Hazrat Gangohi (RA) was the eldest of the akaabir. It was his (RA) saying that if a person feels he did not achieve anything even after the hard work throughout his entire life, then he has achieve everything. Even after the status of a person is established but he still sees himself worthless after leaving not a single stone unturned to achieve his goal, it is this humility that Allah SWT likes in a person. To consider oneself worthless in every moment of his life is humility and this is slavery. So keep doing the job be it perfect or imperfect and inshaaAllah imperfection will turn one day into perfection. A person started learning to write and he couldn’t write the letter “jeem” properly and seeing that he became frustrated that he couldn’t write it correctly. It will be said to this person not to aim for utmost perfection in the beginning itself but keep writing and he will start writing “jeem” properly over a period of time. Initially one may not be attached to a work but keep doing it whatever be the case.

Whenever you get the tawfeeq, do it. Don’t think, “O yesterday I didn’t do and what is the use of doing it today”. You can do things with utmost care but if one day gets missed, do not worry. You can do it again. If you say, “I do for two days, then it gets missed. I again do it for a day or two but gets missed again.” Whatever be the case still do it. Missing for few days is better than leaving it continuously or permanently. So keep doing it. If you did a mistake, repent and start again. One may not have natural association with work but have perseverance and that will do the job. You have the concern for your reformation and you have perseverance and quest to achieve Allah’s pleasure, then do it even if you feel lazy sometimes. So keep doing it and inshaaAllah you will see its barakah all by yourself. Let Allah SWT grant us all the tawfeeq for it. Ameen

Allah is the Dominant

My respected elders and Muslim brothers, honorable mothers and sisters, the creator of this whole universe is that one and only Allah. All the power, rule and governance is with Allah SWT alone. Whatever be the plan of my life, be it with respect to honor, disgrace, health, sickness, success and failure is as per His SWT decision and wish. I can make as much plans as I can and if Allah SWT, the Noblest do not wish, they will remain futile. And if Allah SWT decides to grant then even with the smallest plan, generations after generations will yield the benefit. In case of one’s honor, if He decides to disgrace then who can honor him? If the mercy of generous Allah SWT turns away from the plan of safety and honor, then who can grant the same? If all the doors of ways and means seems closed and if Allah SWT, the Merciful decides to open His door of Mercy then who can close that door? And if He SWT closes the very same door, then who can open it? Only Allah’s decision dominates. If He SWT decides on something the whole world cannot withhold it. If He SWT decides to grant, none can stop and if He SWT closes the door then none can open it.

Whatever of mercy (i.e.of good), Allah may grant to mankind, none can withhold it, and whatever He may withhold, none can grant it thereafter. And He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise. Al-Quran: 35:2

If He SWT decides to honor someone, none can humiliate him and if His SWT command is passed on one’s disgrace, then none can honor him. He SWT is Al-Qahhar, the only one Dominant. The kingdom of heavens and earth solely belongs to Him SWT alone. If He SWT decides to expand one’s provision none can constrict it and if He SWT decides to constrict it then none can expand it. He is Ar-Razaaq and all decisions regarding your provision are made with Him. He is Al-Mateen, so strong and powerful that if he decides to grant one food, even if the whole world gathers together, they cannot reduce the food even by one morsel. This whole universe is governed as directed by Al-Khaliq, the Creator and Al-Malik, the King. Nothing happens here by co-incidence such as getting honor or shutting up of door of provision. His SWT was a firm and an established rule in which even the tiniest portion of this earth cannot move away from its position on its own will, a leaf cannot fall from the tree on its own will and a drop of water in the oceans cannot move away on its own will.

A rain drop falls on the earth with His SWT permission and it benefits the earth with His SWT permission. The seed bursts out in the earth with His SWT permission and the taste it brings is also with His SWT permission. It is by His SWT decision the fruits get colors and taste. Nothing here comes on its own all of a sudden or by coincidence. The entire system goes by His SWT command. His SWT is the strong, unshakable and everlasting existence that neither did the sun stop giving outs its rays, the moon give up its reflection, the stars give up their light nor did they shift from their allocated path for thousands of years and such is the firm and established governance of Allah SWT. Look at the sky, centuries have passed, do you see any defect? Allah SWT-Just reflect on this name. The entire system is running by that strong and everlasting Noble Lord. All the plans related to honor, health, martyrdom etc. comes by His SWT decision. He is Al-Awwal, Al-Akhir, Az-Zaahir and Al-Baatin. He SWT is the First and He SWT is the Last. Nothing was before Him SWT and after Him SWT. Nothing is like Him SWT apparently and none knows the hidden things as He SWT knows.

We do recognize our Rabb

O the honorable ones! This recognition of Allah SWT Alhamdulillah is in every Muslim’s heart in some corner and that is why when Muslims sense some special season, they come running towards His SWT house in troops after troops. The recognition of Allah SWT that there is one Being is in some portion of Muslims’ heart and that is why Muslims both men and women run towards His SWT house in herds after herds.  Yes it happens sometimes a slave gets garz, he errs and becomes away from his Rabb but for certain He SWT is in his heart.  He SWT is definitely in his heart. He SWT is also a very Generous Lord. He SWT is very much aware of our weaknesses that we will forget Him SWT. He SWT grants such a fragrant season and flourishing moments that even the weakest of the weakest Muslims in faith comes to His SWT house sensing that fragrance. And the slave eventually takes benefit from that flourishing season. He SWT allotted certain months, days, nights, hours and seasons in which the elegance of His SWT mercy is outstanding and excelling. For example regarding the night of Barat (middle night of Shaaban) Huzur SAW explains about the excellence of rain of forgiveness of Allah’s SWT mercy falling during this special night by a parable as follows. There used to be a tribe named Kalb who had a large number of sheep. To make us understand he SAW said that Allah SWT forgives a large number of people in this night exceeding the total number of hairs found on the body of all those sheep.

Allah SWT is there for you

There are some nights, days, months and hours when the mercy of Allah flows like a flood, river and sea. A Muslim identifies his Allah SWT but sometimes a veil of heedlessness falls on him and he forgets Him SWT. Allah SWT sends him such days so he comes to His SWT house and the veil of heedlessness gets torn. He SWT lets His slave who cut off from Him SWT come to Him SWT again. He SWT lets His forgetful slave remember Him again. He SWT lets the slave who distanced from Him SWT to become closer to Him SWT again. Allah SWT sends such hours when all these happen. Parents can keep forgiving the disobedient son for days and even months but if the son abandons them and disobeys them for years and years and comes back to them very late, they will ask him if he remembers them only now after years passed by. Strange and amazing is the attitude that Allah SWT shows to His SWT slaves. For years and years a slave disobeys Him SWT, the entire world rejects him, he becomes old with empty pockets, gets dejected with hatred by his friends and family to the extent that none even replies to his greetings, he becomes weak with bent hip carrying his loads of filthy sins on his shoulder and in such a state when he turns to His SWT Rabb, Allah SWT says “O My slave! You might have delayed turning to Me but there is no delay in Me accepting your repentance”.

Not just this our beloved Prophet SAW has said that Allah SWT not just forgets this slave who came to Him SWT with the wealth of repentance but also He SWT erases all the bad deeds from his book of deeds, from the memory of His angels that wrote and remembered his sins, from the portion of the earth where he committed the sins and from the part of his body that committed the sin so His SWT slave do not get ashamed and face the humiliation on the Day on Judgement because of his sins. O the honorable ones! We have the recognition of Allah SWT whom we identify in our hearts that all the treasure of provision is with Him SWT, all the decisions regarding our life are made by Him SWT, the order regarding our honor is passed by Him SWT, the medal of martyrdom comes from Him SWT and the phase of success is destined by Him SWT. The weakest of the weakest believer knows all these in his heart. It is true a slave forgets his Lord for the whole week but he makes it that he comes to His house on Friday. There is something inside him, right? For months he forget his Lord but in the month of Ramadan he places his forehead in His SWT house. He identifies his Lord. In everyone’s life the plateau of weaknesses is distinct. Some are weaker than the other but in everyone’s heart there is definitely a spark of faith.

Blessed time do not come often

O the honorable ones! All this is because of the blessing of kalma (words) of my Prophet SAW. Allah SWT granted us the lap of such parents where the Prophet’s (SAW) name echoed in our ears. We got to say those words and got such an environment. It is because of this that Allah’s SWT recognition is present somewhere in the heart which drags us to Allah’s SWT house in blessed hours and we get called.  O honorable ones! We do not get such hours very often in our life. All this we get as an opportunity. How many were with you who were present in a night like this last year but not alive today? How many? We should appreciate the leisure time that Allah SWT grants us to get us close to Him SWT. It should not so happen that we face death when we are away from Him SWT or else even there we might be away from the mercy of Allah SWT. This is the world of deeds and tomorrow there will be just days of reward. The limit of Allah’s mercy towards doing deeds is in this world of deeds. In the afterlife, there is only the decision on Justice. Allah SWT granted us this opportunity to obtain blessed hours again this year. Keep this is in mind that as far as the night of Baraat is concerned there are about 10 narrations from the respected Companions of the Prophet SAW indicating that there is Allah’s SWT worship during this night.

The night of Baraat

The Companions, their first and second generations who are the foundation of our religion have given importance to the worship during this night. Yes if you adopt any practice thinking that to be a part of religion even though it has the best face but not practiced by the Prophet SAW, his Companions, their first and second generations, that would then only take you away from Allah SWT. All these respected elders did voluntary acts of worship, recited Quran and made during this night but they didn’t adopt any peculiar or exclusive way of worship like tasbeeh salah in congregation. None prayed in congregation during this night as seen from the life of Prophet SAW, his Companions, and their first and second generations. The Prophet SAW has stressed to pray voluntary prayers in seclusion all alone and preferably in one’s house. He SAW disliked congregation in such prayers. Depending on the strength you have, pray voluntary prayers as much as you can. There is no proposed Surahs of Quran that you should recite in such prayers. You can recite any surah you remember. It is not necessary that you should do voluntary prayers, you can recite the Quran, do zikr, remember Allah SWT by His SWT beautiful names and if you do not have enough strength to do any of these acts staying awake during the night, Allah SWT still won’t deprive you of His SWT blessings if you just pray farz salah of isha and fajr in congregation.

When in religion something goes out of proportion, then people doing that will become deprived of doing the real acts of Sunnah. They will spend the entire night in fairs engulfed in noise but will miss the fajr salah. After maghrib, they will pray in an exclusive way but none will appear for fajr salah when it is compulsory. Who knows if the person spends the night in the way of Sunnah, it becomes a means for his change of whole life towards good. If he pleases Allah SWT during this night and follow the Sunnah, there is hope that Allah SWT by His SWT mercy will call him towards His SWT house for the rest of his life and will never deprive him of His SWT mercy. Until his death, Allah SWT might call him continuously towards His SWT house by the acceptance of his Sunnah deeds. This indeed is the blessing of this night. I spent one night for Him SWT and develop such a strong contact with him that for the rest of my life I get accepted into His SWT house. There won’t be any daring act to leave one salah in my life after that. Worship during one night can bring a person such closeness to Allah SWT.

With Allah SWT, the quality matters and not the quantity. Small acts of good quality done in accordance with the shariah and Sunnah of the Prophet SWT can be huge like mountains in the sight of Allah SWT. On the other hand if you do many acts of worship but not in line with shariah, or against the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW or without seeing the ways of the Companions, then they won’t have any value or worth with Allah SWT. There is worship in this night for both men and women with as much strength that Allah SWT grants one. Neither it is apt to say that there is no worship in this particular night not it is apt to start some form of worship against the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW during this night. The real worship is as done by the Prophet SAW, his Companions, and their first and second generations. Let Allah SWT be pleased by our worship.

Visiting the grave during the night of Baraat

For sure there is worship during this night when the decision of forgiveness takes place. There is only one hadith stating that the Prophet SAW visited jannatul Baqi (graveyard in Madinah) during this night but there is no narrations affirming that he visited Jannatul Baqi often during the nights of Baraat in his entire life. Same was the practice of the companions; sometimes they visited and sometimes they did not. If in case a person visits the graveyard with the intention of following the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW, to remember his death and to make duaa for the dead ones then Allah SWT will reward him provided he doesn’t do any superstitious acts there. Visiting graveyard should not be considered as part of the night and as something compulsory to do during this night. To do acts set by the limit is deen and if one exaggerates, it will become transgression. Also the Prophet SAW did not just visit graveyard during only this night, he SAW visited grave as such almost every week as he SAW liked visiting. There is nothing special about visiting during the night of baraat.

Ramadhan preparation

It has been the practice of the Prophet SAW to fast more between 1st and 27th of the month of Shabaan. He SAW just leaves out 2-3 fasting before Ramadhan so one enters Ramadhan freshly. The Prophet SAW also fasts on 13th, 14th and 15th of every month. Keeping this in view if one fasts one, two or there days, it is well and good. So if a Muslim does an act to the limit authenticated by shariah, he will have the reward. The truth is Allah SWT made this night special before Ramadhan so we get the ability to receive the blessings and lights of Ramadhan. When there is fall of rain of mercy and if the bowl is held upside down, one cannot collect the rain. Similarly if the bowl is held upright but is dirty then the water that falls into the bowl also becomes dirty. Ramadhan is the month of mercy, blessings, lights and forgiveness and Allah SWT has excuses to grant one generously. Before this month, Allah SWT grants this night so we hold the bowl upright and keep it clean so we become eligible to collect the blessing of Ramadhan. Allah SWT granted this night so from this night we start setting us up for the upcoming blessed month. You also get season for sale right? How in advance you start preparing for that sale! Everything goes off normal as production increases, hard work increases, the scheme changes as the season is coming. In advance the season is given importance.

SubhanAllah! The season is coming for the people of eemaan. The season of spring is coming. A Muslim prepares for it in advance. This night is indeed a part of preparation for that month. The biggest deed of this night is to seek forgiveness from Allah SWT so the bowl of our heart becomes upright and at the same time clean. The biggest sign of acceptance of one’s deed in this world is Allah SWT grants him divine help to do better deed the next day. If anyone’s deeds during this night is accepted then his next night will pass better than this. The upcoming life becomes better than the past life. This is the sign that this night has been accepted in the court of Allah SWT. When a person gets close to the powerful person, he gets content that he will decide only the best for him. The truth is when a slave gets close to Allah SWT through repentance, he becomes content that Allah SWT will only decide best for his life. O the honorable ones! When you come to the line of friends of Allah SWT, all the decisions with regards to your life will turn best. Just get out of the ranks of His SWT enemies.

Join the ranks of Allah’s friends

Allah SWT says in one place, “Allah’s enemies do not pay zakat”. In another place, He SWT says “Allah’s enemies do not offer salah”. In one another place, He SWT says “Allah’s enemies do not eat halaal and do not save themselves from haraam”. All these are the acts of enemies. By avoiding these acts, we have come to the ranks of His SWT friends that these acts will not happen again. I will offer salah, I will remove the haram from my life, I will pay any leftover zakah if any and I have come to the ranks of Your friends and I will not do any of the acts of Your enemies. We all want our Rabb to make better decisions for our life. The first prescription for this is to come to the ranks of Allah SWT which is repentance. A person can be highly khataakaar, highly sinful but if he decides with utter regret and shame that whatever happened so far is wrong and this will not happen again then the Prophet SAW said if a person repents, then he is like he did not sin at all. He becomes pure from sins. The lights and blessings of Allah SWT is achieved by the friends of Allah SWT. Before this is the night of decision so Allah SWT decides us to join His SWT friends. The prescription for this seeking forgiveness.

Our beloved Prophet SAW said: “If somebody commIts a sin and then says, ‘O My Lord! I have sinned, please forgive me!’ and his Lord says, ‘My slave has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for it, I therefore have forgiven My slave (his sins).’ Then he remains without committing any sin for a while and then again commits another sin and says, ‘O My Lord, I have committed another sin, please forgive me,’ and Allah says, ‘My slave has known that he has a Lord who forgives sins and punishes for It, I therefore have forgiven My slave (his sin). Then he remains without Committing any another sin for a while and then commits another sin (for the third time) and says, ‘O My Lord, I have committed another sin, please forgive me,’ and Allah says, ‘My slave has known that he has a Lord Who forgives sins and punishes for It I therefore have forgiven My slave (his sin), he can do whatever he likes.”

Seeking forgiveness is the biggest amal of this night. If you have been forgiven and joined His SWT friends then your life become colorful like that of His SWT friends. He won’t be the one who will pray only during this night but he will become the one who regularly offers salah throughout his life as he has come to the ranks of His SWT friends. He won’t be like the one who prays only occasionally such as once a week or a month or a year as he got the friendship of Allah SWT. O honorable ones! I am telling you the truth Allah SWT grands wealth, property, land, position and rank even to His SWT enemies. Allah SWT grants even beauty and health to His SWT enemies but the life that is beloved to Allah SWT is granted only to His SWT friends. Rest of all the things including wealth, property, land, position, rank, health, beauty and treasure Allah SWT grants to everyone both His SWT friends and enemies. The life pleasing to Allah SWT is granted only for His SWT slaves.

Get a pleasant life

When one gets the life pleasing to Allah SWT, then Allah SWT grants him reward and his life becomes pleasant. His worldly life becomes pleasant, his death becomes pleasant and the afterlife becomes more pleasant. This is an eternal reward. Allah SWT grants His SWT enemies wealth but for how long? The enemy gets the health but for how long? He gets the land, property and beauty but for how long? And what does His SWT friends get? Hayaat e tayyiba-A pleasant eternal life. Not just pleasure in this life but also during his death and a life after that. He will get to enjoy his life. This is the reward from Allah SWT for leading a life pleasing to Him SWT. The religious scholars and commentators of Quran have said when explaining about Hayaat e Tayyiba that Allah SWT will save the person from constriction in rizq (provision) and his heart will never be poor. He will remain protected from deprivation from inside. Neither will he become beggar before anyone inwardly or outwardly spreading his hands before others. This is the reward of hayaat e tayyiba that Allah SWT will make his heart rich. Allah SWT will grant him the wealth of contentment. When this is one reward the other reward Allah SWT grants him is tranquility which he will possess irrespective of having any companion or not. Allah SWT will grant him the wealth of tranquility in this world, during death and the afterlife cannot even be described. Hayaat e tayyib- a life of tranquility and a death of tranquility.

The third reward he gets is Allah SWT will put respect for him in the hearts of those who are special to Him SWT. He got the love in the court of Allah SWT, in the court of angels and on the earth Allah SWT will put love and respect for him in the hearts of his beloved slaves. O the honorable ones! Ask Allah SWT the most valuable thing of His SWT treasure, the life pleasing to Him SWT. And the beginning of that pleasant life is repentance, to seek forgiveness by coming out of the ranks of His SWT enemies, by proclaiming the hatred for the life of enemies and by expressing the hatred towards the acts of enemies. He then starts stepping towards His SWT friends. If we get the wealth of forgiveness in this night by joining His SWT friends, from tomorrow the color of our life will change. This is the sign that Allah SWT has accepted his night and a small deed for this a true regret of the heart. O Allah SWT! Whatever happened so far is wrong but this will not happen again. O the honorable ones! Doing zikr, praying voluntary prayers, reciting Quran, giving charity, doing umrah are all voluntary acts but seeking forgiveness from Allah SWT is a compulsory act. The regret for sins and seeking repentance is compulsory. Many times todays Muslim is more enthusiastic in performing voluntary acts but leaves out compulsory acts. He thinks this is piety. Seeking forgiveness for one’s sins and repentance is compulsory because of which a person joins Allah’s SWT friends and proclaims that he is no more connected to the enemies of Allah SWT.

Hold on to compulsory acts

O the honorable ones! The biggest deed of this night is to seek forgiveness with true regret in the heart. Once we join the friends of Allah SWT, all the voluntary deeds will have a great value. If a clerk doesn’t do things allocated to him but does some other work, will he get appreciation? He will be asked to do that which is allocated for him first and in case he does his allocated work and additionally does voluntary acts, then he will be highly appreciated. When it comes to his real responsibility he is turning away and the work which he is not responsible for, he is doing it fashionably. So tell me will he have any value or appreciation in the sight of his boss? Yes if he did his real job and then additional jobs, his value and respect will increase. The real job is to come to the side of Allah’s SWT friends which is repentance for sins with true regret. With this if one does voluntary acts then his value and worth increases with Allah SWT. He is not doing that which he is responsible for and that which is compulsory but says, “I did so much of tasbih, prayed so many units of voluntary prayers”.

O dear! All these will have value and worth only when one fulfills compulsory acts.  That is why there is a very big act to be done during this night. The Prophet SAW has said that there are so many major sins which if one does it during this night will be deprived of all sorts of mercy of Allah SWT. If a person has jealousy and rancor in his heart and he doesn’t repent for it then he won’t be forgiven even when there is a fall of rain of Allah’s mercy. So the biggest deed of this night is to repent and seek forgiveness. Along with this if he does many voluntary acts then he will have great value in Allah’s SWT sight. And the biggest sign of our acceptance of repentance by Allah SWT is that our way life gets changed. From tomorrow our life will be like that of Allah’s SWT friends. Will he then dare to have anything haram in his house or dare to leave any salah or to err in paying zakat? No he won’t because all these are the acts of Allah’s SWT enemies. Now you will see only the life Allah’s SWT friends in him. One will be very fortunate to receive the blessings of this night if he does many voluntary acts along with seeking forgiveness which is to be done during this night. In reality, a person is welcoming Ramadhan in advance to attain its blessings by pleasing Allah SWT by worshipping Him SWT in this night. We express that we really appreciate the month of Ramadhan and would like to take advantage of blessings, mercy and forgiveness granted in this blessed month.

Let’s welcome Ramadhan

This is the preparation for upcoming Ramadhan and we started changing our plans related to our work, muamulat and started giving importance for Ramadhan like how I want to be in Ramadhan such as how much I will pray daily, how much I will recite the Quran daily, how much time I will spend in Allah’s SWT house and how much time a woman would spend in the place of salah. Right from now he/she plans the strategy for Ramadhan so blessed time is not wasted in Ramadhan. Our Prophet SAW used to praying for Ramadhan even before Shaaban that is in the month of Rajab. Allahumma barik lana fi Rajab wa Sha’ban wa ballighna Ramadan:-.”O Allah! Make the months of Rajab and Sha’ban blessed for us, and let us reach the month of Ramadan”. The preparation used to start right from Rajab that Ramadhan is coming. O the honorable ones! Allah SWT is granting this opportunity which we should take advantage of and make use of this night with the best of our ability so decisions on forgiveness is taken in our favor. Seek forgiveness for you, all the Muslims, your family members and all those who are near you.


Let Allah SWT grant us all the ability to act on what we say, hear, write and read. Grant us all a life pleasing to you and forgive us and all the believing men and women. O Allah! Forgive our sins by Your grace. Forgive our hidden and open sins. O Allah! Show us your grace and generosity and grant us complete forgiveness. O Allah! By Your grace join us among those who are accepted by You and beloved to You. O Lord! Protect us from the filth of sins. O Lord! Just like your beloved slaves attain during this night, grant us also a share in that. O Allah! Join us among Your chosen slaves for whom You will grant in this night. O Allah! Do not deprive us from the mercy and blessings of this night. O Allah! Forgive us completely and forgive all the people of eemaan. O Allah! By Your grace and mercy grant us all a life pleasing to You, a death pleasing to You and join us among the righteous slaves on the Day of Judgement. Grant us halal and blessed provision and a blessed life. O Allah! Save us from an evil life and an evil death. Grant us a respectful life and a respectful death with shahaadath.

O Lord! Protect us from jealous people, evil people and oppressors. O Allah! Purify us outwardly and inwardly. O Allah! Purify our hearts from the filth of every form of jealousy, hatred and rancor. O Allah! Purify our hearts for Muslims from jealousy and all kind of filth. O Allah! Purify our hearts and our eyes. O Allah! By Your grace grant us all the true love, eemaani love for each other and the strength of Islam. O Allah! Grant us the brotherhood of eemaan and Islam. O Allah! Purify our hearts from the darkness of jealousy, hatred and rancor of all kinds. O Lord! By Your grace and mercy fulfill all the permissible needs of believing men and women. O Allah! Each of us have desires and needs in our hearts. You are the knower of unseen. You know what lies in the hearts. You are aware of the needs and desires of the hearts. O My Lord! How many are there who cannot say through their tongues what they need or can share with others but you are aware of what is in the heart. Fulfill all their needs, ease and end the difficulties and grant us all the life of respect, peace and tranquility. Grant us death with eemaan.

O Allah! Accept all the duaas of brothers and sisters who requested for duaa. Grant health with aafiyah to the sick. O Allah! Save us from evil life, evil death, and dishonor after honor, distress after aafiyah, sickness and diseases after health and hospitalization. O My Lord! Do not leave us in the hands of evil people, oppressors, and irreligious people. O My Lord! Grant us all Your shadow of mercy and help. O Lord! Forgive us and all our relatives. Forgive all our relatives who passed away from this world and make easy all the paths of akhirah for them. O Allah! Make their graves the garden of Jannah. O Allah! Grant you all the divine help to seek true forgiveness before meeting our death. O Allah! By Your grace and mercy, grant us the true regret and repentance for our sins and wrongdoings. O Allah! Grant us all a perfect forgiveness and forgive all the Muslim Ummah. O Allah! Treat all the people of eemaan with Mercy. Save all the Muslims from oppressors and help them against the oppressors. O Allah! Wherever the Muslims are doing the religious work sincerely, grant them Your help and mercy. Protect the masaajid, madaaris and ulema. O Allah! Use all our means and abilities for Your deen as pleasing to You. Accept our life, our means and abilities in protection of Your deen as You like. O Allah! Protect the masaajid and madaaris from the weakness of our own ones and evil plots of strangers. O Allah! Protect our country from all kinds of filth and unite Muslims. Show mercy on our country, city and on our condition.

O Allah! Grant us all the month of Ramadhan with eemaan, aafiyah and good health. O Allah! Make us all prepare and welcome Ramadhan as You please and give us strength and courage to plan accordingly. O Allah! Join us among those who appreciate the month of Ramadhan. O Allah! Join us among those who appreciate the month of Ramadhan. O Allah! Join us among those who appreciate the month of Ramadhan. O Allah! Make the blessed time of blessed Ramadhan a means for Muslims progress and success.


A Muslim’s honor and disgrace lies in his deeds

Aoudhubillaahi minashshaitaan nirrajeem



By means of sins, a slave becomes contemptible before his Lord and falls before His SWT eyes. Hazrat Hasan Basri (RA) says that Allah SWT saves those from sins who are honorable before Him SWT and whoever becomes humiliated before Allah SWT, none in the world respects him. Yes people can show respect outwardly to a person fearing his evil when their hearts are filled with hatred and disgust for him. The true respect of a person is that which comes from Allah SWT and descends down to the earth for that person. This respect not just remains while he is alive but also continues after his death. It is the effect of the sin or say that it is the punishment of the sin that a person continues doing sin upon sin until the greatest of the sins becomes smaller in his eyes. This in fact is the sign of destruction of the slave when sins become smaller in his sight while it is really big in Allah’s SWT sight. Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mas’ood (RA) narrates that Prophet SAW said: “The believer sees his sins as if he were sitting beneath a mountain which he feared was about to fall upon him, whereas the wicked sees his sins like a man who finds a fly settle upon his nose, so he brushes away”. Depending upon the honor of a person in Allah’s (SWT) court, he is saved from the sins and he keeps himself away from the sins. When a person becomes wretched and contemptible in Allah’s (SWT) sight, he keeps getting immersed in the sins until he sees the greatest of the sins as smaller and when this happens, know that his time of destruction has started.

The effect of sins not just destroys the human but reaches far beyond to the animals bringing in devastation and destruction. The effect of sin is so intense and severe that it creates catastrophe in the surrounding of the person that commits sin.  The sinner not just burns and destroys himself with his sins but also drags in innocent people and other creatures along with him in this evil effect. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) says that even birds start dying in their cages because of the oppression of a sinner. This is the extent of the effect of sins. When a person is oppressing day and night, he is not just violating the rights of Allah SWT but also the rights of other creatures. Imagine what a fire he started with such a catastrophe that keeps eating him from inside! Hazrat Mujaahid (RA) says even the animals curse the oppressors when the rain stops to shower. Even the animals know that the stopping of rain of mercy is because of the adversity of human deeds. When a plague spreads in a region, it not just affects the weak but also the healthy ones. Similar is the effect of sins. It affects all. Hazrat Ikrima (RA) says that even the insects such as ants, lizards, scorpions etc. start screaming that it is because of the children of Adam that the rain of Allah’s mercy has stopped showering. The sinner not just becomes prey to the punishment of his sins but also to the curse of innocent creatures affected by him. He is affected not just by his own sins but also by the adversity faced by the other creatures. How many creatures start cursing him! Indeed with all certainty the sins bring humiliation and disgrace.

If a person is questing for honor, know that it is only with Allah SWT. “Whosoever desires honor, power and glory then to Allah belong all honor, power and glory” Al quran-35:10. And know that one can get honor, power and glory only by obeying and worshipping Allah alone. That is why the duaa is: “Allahumma a’izzani bi-thaa’atika wa la tudzillani bi-maa’shiyatika”. O Allah! Honor me through your obedience and do not humiliate me through your disobedience. Hazrat Hasan Basri (RA) says that a person can move in a lofty vehicle wearing royal clothes with servants in front and behind him giving a majestic look but he cannot be saved from the disgrace that is showered on him by his sins. All these lofty things cannot give him honor as the disgrace of his sins is covering him. Hazrat Abdullah ibn Mubarak (RA) says, “I have seen the sins making the heart dead, persistence of sins leads to disgrace, the life of heart is in safety from sins, your good lies in preventing the sins and none made the religion bad except the bad rulers, bad spiritual leaders and bad people”. Intellect is a blessing from Allah SWT and a name of light. The darkness of sins extinguishes this light for certain. The sinner do such foolish acts that people wonder if he has any intellect. A mad man sees sound minded people as mad. This is the case of a sinner. On one hand he sins and on the other hand he boasts about his sins. He calls those who protect themselves from sins as silly people. Our righteous predecessors has said that when a man persists in disobeying Allah SWT his intellect vanishes because if he had any intellect, it would have stopped him from sinning. When one knows that the King of kings is watching him, seeing him, can grab him firmly for his acts and has complete control and knowledge of him and in spite of this if he disobeys Allah SWT, then what does it imply? He is devoid of intellect, right? It is the sign of stupidity that does not prevent him from sins. Why doesn’t he understand that his life is in the hands of Allah SWT, the every blessing he is enjoying is bestowed by Him SWT, his progress and destruction is under His SWT control, Allah SWT is completely aware of his deeds, he is residing in His space and His SWT angels are surrounding him? And he is disobeying Allah SWT in front of Him SWT in His house. The Quran is advising him not to do that, his eeman (faith) is enjoining him not to do that and even the death and hell are warning him not to do that. In spite of all this, if he is still persisting in committing sins, then it is an unfortunate sign that he has been completely deprived of intellect and insight. The sins have snatched away his intellect and insight and that is why in spite of all these hindrances he is still disobeying Allah SWT. Otherwise a man of sound intellect can never do this. When the sins exceed, the heart is sealed and the sinner remains insensible and ignorant.

Nothing but rather, their earnings have rusted their hearts. Al-Quran-83:14. The tafsir of this verse states that it’s because of committing sins upon sins to the extent that the heart becomes blind. Just a person losing eyesight is called as a blind, the darkness of sins make the heart blind and the insight leaves him. The religious scholars have stated that when sins multiply they surround the heart and the heart is said to be rusted and the rust dominates the person. And when the sins increase further, it becomes the characteristics of that person and a stage is reached when his heart gets sealed. Let Allah SWT protect us from that state. Ameen. Slowly and slowly his heart disappears in cover of sins. Without insight, the heart turns upside down and his enemy becomes completely dominant over him and make him dance to his tune. There won’t be any filth or sin he would find difficult to act on. The enemy takes him wherever he wills. Take courage to save from sins. What cannot happen with courage? But a man do not even intent to lead a sinless life. A man intends to do such and such good deeds but he doesn’t bother about violating others right through his acts, deeds or words and in fact he doesn’t even resolve to save himself from that. The man decides to do voluntary prayers and other good deeds but he doesn’t think to give up his weaknesses and sins. As he doesn’t resolve to give up sins, in spite of continuously doing righteous deeds he reaches a time when the divine help to do good deeds is snatched away from him. He carries on doing certain good deeds regularly for some days and then become deprived of carrying those deeds. A man attends masjid for congregational prayers, recites Quran daily, gives charity and then suddenly the sins throw such an adverse effect on him that he gives up all these. Do not just resolve to do good deeds but start analyzing about the sins you are prone to committing them. If you see some sins that you can easily give up, then give it up immediately. As far as those sins that are difficult to give up, turn to Allah SWT for the help and courage just like you got the divine help to do good deeds and work towards leaving those sins.

Unless and until the life gets purified from sins, there won’t be steadfastness in doing righteous deeds and in fact one doesn’t even get the light of righteous deeds or sense their fragrance. If you pour a whole bottle of itr (perfume) on a dirty cloth lying on cow dung, do you think you will sense the fragrance of itr. If you remove that cloth from the dung and apply just a drop of itr on that, how fragrant the cloth will become! If a person does righteous deeds and at the same time is committing sins, then how will he sense the fragrance of good deeds? Yes if you move away from the sins and if you do even little good deeds, you will find its effect, grasp its light and sense its fragrance. You can do thousands of voluntary prayers but it cannot be equated to giving up sins because leaving sins is a compulsory act. Voluntary acts cannot compete a compulsory act. Yes because of voluntary acts, one get the power through which giving up sins becomes easy but you should first resolve to save yourselves from sins. Many times a man doesn’t even intent to give up sins and in fact he is determined that sins will go along with his life and is a part of life. If life cannot be lead without sins, then why did Allah SWT made the sins haram? If I do not have power to give up sins, then why would Allah SWT ask me to give up sins? If you do not burden a child more than he could bear, it is your nobility. Will Allah SWT, the Noblest of noblest and Merciful of the merciful burden a person to give up sins without implanting power in him? How can this happen? Well I think I do not burden a child more than his ability because I care for him and how about Allah SWT who loves us more than our mothers? O honorable ones! All this is within our ability and that is why Allah SWT is asking us to save ourselves from sins. There is only destruction and devastation in sins and that is why Allah SWT is asking us to stay away from it. The evil consequence of sins is not just in this world but also in the hereafter and that is why Allah SWT asked us to save ourselves. Whenever a man resolves to do good deeds, it is very essential for him to resolve to give up sins also because only then he will be fortunate enough to receive the blessings of religiousness and the blessings of voluntary acts become clearly visible.

O Allah help us all to act on what we hear, write and read. O Allah grant us life pleasing to You, purify us outwardly and inwardly. O Allah make it easy for us to give up sins and help us to practice deen completely. O Allah purify our life when in seclusion. O Allah make us act justly with Your creations and protect us from violating anyone’s rights. O Allah grant us khushu in salah, taste in reciting Quran and grant us courage and strength to save ourselves from sins easily. O Allah help us in every step we take forward in your religion with your support and assistance. O Allah Keeping our weaknesses in mind grant us your special assistance.  O Allah End our life with eemaan (faith) and grant us a life pleasing to you.  O Allah Grant us eemaan, its characteristics and a life of eemaan. O Allah Grant us the good characteristics and manners of your beloved Prophet SAW. Ameen

Ramadhan 2013 Khulasa-e-Quran: Part 1

Allahu Akbar! We entered the blessed month
See how Allah ﷻ has granted us the month of spring. SubhanAllah! SubhanAllah! SubhanAllah! Certainly it seems that the marquee of mercy of Allah ﷻ has been set up with illuminating surrounding and illuminating breeze. Let Allah ﷻ make us be grateful for granting us such a beautiful chance and granted us Ramadhan once again in our life. The Prophet ﷺ said, “If my ummat could assess the blessings of Ramadhan, then they would wish Allah ﷻ makes the whole year as Ramadhan”. What sort of things that Allah ﷻ does not grant this mankind in this blessed month of Ramadhan! The Muslims’ faces become cheerful, peaceful and get the shine of noor maashaaAllah. O honorable ones! Be grateful for this and make every single moment of this month precious. I am speaking the truth that this sitting of you and me in this majlis (gathering) and hearing the Quran cannot happen without Allah’s ﷻ mercy. If you ask someone to spend time with you for five minutes and the person sits for an hour, then you happily express, “I asked only for five minutes and he sat for a whole 1 hr”. And so if you come to Allah’s ﷻ house for few minutes and Allah ﷻ made you sit for long, then what a great thing it is! The dearer the guest is, longer and more does Allah ﷻ makes him sit.

The summary of the Quran
O honorable ones! Praise to Allah ﷻ that He ﷻ granted us Ramadhan and also granted us the Quran. There is a very special connection between Ramadhan and the Quran. Alhamdulillah! Today we recited the first juzz of Quran where first came the Surah Fatiha . It is very difficult to give a summary of the whole Quran in a very short time but the beauty of Quran is that one could give the summary of the Quran in two minutes when he cannot narrate the tafsir (commentary) of the Quran in the whole of his lifetime. Such a great wealth! One of the great mufassir (commentator) of Quran, Hazrat Ahmed Ali Roohaani (RA) says that if any person asks him, “O Ahmed Ali tell me the summary of the tafsir of the Quran” and the whistle was already blown for the train to start and one of my legs is inside the train and the other outside, then even in this very short time, he can tell him the summary of the tafsir of the whole Quran that the summary of the whole Quran is to worship Allah ﷻ, to obey the Prophet ﷺ and to serve the creations of Allah ﷻ. This is the summary of the whole Quran: to worship Allah ﷻ, to obey the Prophet ﷺ and to serve the creations of Allah ﷻ. The summary of the whole Quran is in Surah Fatiha. The mention of Allah’s ﷻ oneness and His ﷻ greatness, the risaalat (the finality of the Prophethood) of the Prophet ﷺ, the mention of life after death; the beautiful end of those who followed the commands of Allah ﷻ and the humiliating and disgraceful end of those who clashed against the nizaam (governance) of Allah ﷻ, all these are summarized in Surah Fatiha which has been presented in the whole of the Quran. The whole Quran is comprised in the above five things whose summary is in the Surah Fatiha. Perhaps this is why Allah ﷻ made this to be heard and read repeatedly in every salah for the Muslims so the summary of the Quran remain afresh in their hearts and minds. When the summary of the whole Quran is in the Surah Fatiha, the summary of the Surah Fatiha is in the “Ba” of the “Bismillaah”. The Arabic meaning of “Ba” is to connect, which means the summary of the Quran is to connect the slave with his Allah ﷻ.

O honorable ones! Let the good thing happen that we get to hear some tafsir of Quran that we hear and recite and let Allah ﷻ so make it happen that this season becomes a means of our connection with Allah ﷻ. And the one who gets connected to Allah ﷻ will be protected from the arrows of all the distress, trials, worries and restlessness of this world. One of the names of the Surah Fatiha is also Surat-ud-Duaa in which Allah ﷻ has showed the slave the method of requesting. Praise Allah ﷻ, exalt Allah ﷻ, place your humility in the presence of Allah ﷻ and then present your maqsood (purpose) in the court of Allah ﷻ. And what is that maqsood? Ya Allah! Grant me the guidance. If an employer tells you to bring a letter of request when you ask him for leave, then it means that the employer is willing to grant you leave and that is why he is giving you the instruction. Similarly Allah ﷻ is showing the slave the method of request which means Allah ﷻ is willing to offer His ﷻ slave. O honorable ones! When a slave makes duaa to Allah ﷻ with firm belief in his heart and placing trust in Allah ﷻ, then Allah ﷻ doesn’t reject the duaa. Yes but Allah ﷻ is Hakeem (wise). Even when a child asks the mother for ice cream, in place of ice cream she gives an apple. Allah ﷻ too does like that. A slave asks for something and Allah ﷻ grants him some other thing because Allah ﷻ has more ilm (knowledge), wisdom and affection than the mother. A slave asks something from his point of view and Allah ﷻ grants him something from His ﷻ own grandeur. O honorable ones! But there is one thing in the whole world which has no replacement to be given in Jannah or in the form of reward. If the slave asks for that thing with the real quest to Allah ﷻ, then he will be definitely granted. If a person asks for a son, maybe he will get a replacement in Jannah, if he asks for wealth, maybe he will get a replacement in Jannah, is he asks for health, maybe he will get a replacement in Jannah, if he asks for his own house, maybe he will get a replacement in Jannah and if there is one thing that will be granted right in this world if a slave asks with true quest is hidaayat (guidance) from Allah ﷻ because its replacement is only in dunya and not in the akhirat. So if anyone seeks guidance from Allah ﷻ with true quest, then Allah ﷻ will definitely grant him the guidance. Thus the other name of the Surah is Surat-ud-Duaa. Plead to Allah ﷻ by praising Him ﷻ, exalting Him ﷻ, placing your inability, dependency and neediness before Allah ﷻ. “ihdinas siraatal mustaqeem” –Guide me to the straight path.

Allah ﷻ then shows the guidance. Siraatal-laziina ‘an-‘amta ‘alay him “Do you need guidance, then embrace the path of those who are on the straight path, upon whom is the inaam (favor) of Allah ﷻ and those were the Prophets, siddiqeen, martyrs and the righteous” Embrace them and Allah ﷻ will guide you to the straight path. Gayril-magdhuubi ‘alay him wa laz-zaaalliin. Who is maghdhuub (those who angered Allah ﷻ)? Maghdhood are those who had the ilm but no righteous deeds. Zaalleen are of that group who out of ignorance became astray. And saalih (righteous) is the one who is fortunate to have correct knowledge and also the amal (righteous deeds). If you got such people on the earth, then it is blessed for you got the guide, the path to paradise, the property and target of guidance. So just hold on to them, you will find it useful. When Allah ﷻ has made them the means of guidance, Allah ﷻ has also made the Allah’s Book as the means of guidance in addition to the people of Allah ﷻ. Then comes Surah Baqarah, where in is the mention of the Book, the guide to those who fear Allah ﷻ.

The three groups of people

In the start of the Surah Baqarah, three groups have been mentioned. The first group is of those who are successful, the group of Muslims whose characteristics are that they believe in the unseen. Without seeing they believe in Allah ﷻ, without seeing they believe in Jannah, without seeing they believe in jahannam, without seeing they believe in the life after death, without seeing they believe in the life of Qabr, without seeing they believe in angels and without seeing they believe in the Books descended from the heaven. When this is one quality of a Muslim believing in unseen, the other quality is that he will worship Allah ﷻ physically, that is he will pray salah and he pleases Allah ﷻ through his wealth. Allah ﷻ mentions that these are the successful ones. Let Allah ﷻ make the standard of the Muslims’ success in the light of the Quran. Our standard of success is that if a person’s wishes are fulfilled more, then he has become successful. O honorable ones! This is not so, the one who got the property of eemaan has become successful. Living in a hut or a palace, it is he who got the victory who got the wealth of hidaayat.

The second group is that of the Kuffar who out of adamancy and arrogance got deprived of the wealth of hidaayat. After a certain time when he himself finishes all the qualities of hidaayat, Allah ﷻ sealed his heart when once such people used to be wise. Abu Jahl was once called Abul Hakam, the one who makes wise decisions, had far sightedness, sharp in judgment but when his heart got sealed, then he couldn’t understand the miracle sent to the Prophet ﷺ, the Quran and became deprived of hidaayat. And the third group is that of the munaafiqeen (hypocrites) who have always become snakes in sleeves of the Muslims. Outwardly they accept Islam but have only hatred for Muslims in their hearts. They wage war against the Muslims in a hidden way. This is the group that makes fun of the deen and the people of Allah ﷻ saying they are fools and of backward when thinking themselves to be very intelligent and far sighted. This is the group whose religion and path tend to be the worldly benefits. If he gets worldly benefit through Islam, he raises the flag of Islam and whenever his worldly benefits fall in danger, he renounces Islam. The mention of these munaafiqeen is in many verses. After mentioning those, Allah ﷻ gives couple of similitude regarding them that these people are blind, deaf and dumb and they remain in the darkness, and they cannot see or hear.

The excellence of mankind
After this is the mention of oneness of Allah ﷻ and truthfulness of the Book of Allah ﷻ. It is mentioned that even if the whole of the mankind gathers, they cannot bring a Surah like in the Quran and not just the Surah, they cannot even bring an aayat like in the Quran. Allah ﷻ then gives example of smallest of the smallest creatures like a mosquito in the ayat. When a similitude is made, it is made only in accordance with the thing compared. Based on wisdom, this world is worth comparable only to a mosquito and only in accordance to this, Allah ﷻ presented the similitude. Allah ﷻ then mentions about the creation of mankind. Allah ﷻ gave the mankind the Khilafat in this world and granted him the responsibility. Then Allah ﷻ made the man as a masjood (a thing of prostration) for the angels. Allah ﷻ gave this honor to the man because he has in him the ability to gain knowledge. Allah ﷻ then mentions about Bani Israel who were favored with countless blessings. They were also blessed with blessings in an unnatural way. But the nation was such an ungrateful nation that they repeatedly made promise to Allah ﷻ and His Prophet (AS) but repeatedly falsified the aayats and broke the promise. Allah ﷻ then debased this nation from the status of honor and put them in humiliation and disgrace. Allah ﷻ mentions that the Jews and Christians can never be the well wishers of the Muslims and in fact they have worst hatred towards Muslims in their hearts and have worst racist attitude towards them in their hearts and they never want the Muslims to progress, to flourish, ascent and gain any honor. They have lots of things in their hearts which they may not express openly but they only wish the Muslims become Jews and Christians.

The standard of success

Allah ﷻ asks the people of eemaan to establish salah and turn towards Allah ﷻ all the time. These Jews and Christians do not have unity even among them and call each other irreligious. Allah ﷻ mentions about Hazrat Ibrahim  who became the leader of the mankind. Allah ﷻ put him in different trials and tribulations but he came out from every trial victorious. Allah ﷻ granted him the rank of leader of the mankind. Through the hands of Hazrat Ibrahim , Allah ﷻ built the kaaba and by the result of his prayer brought the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to this world and even the existence of this ummah is the result of the duaa of the Prophet Ibrahim . Allah ﷻ then brings out the task of the Prophet ﷺ that he teaches people Quran, its tafsir and purifies people. The success of the followers of the Prophet ﷺ was mentioned for whoever abandons his  way will go astray. Allah ﷻ says if we believe like Sahabahs believed then our eemaan too will become reliable. The Sahabahs are standards when it comes to eemaan and truth. Only those who bring eemaan like them and who tread their path will become successful. Allah ﷻ then mentions about one of the propagandas of the Jews about the change of qiblah of the Muslims from Bait-ul-Muqaddas to Bait-ul-Allah towards which the Muslims started praying salah. The Jews started the propaganda that what sort of strange deen is that where people sometimes turn to that side and this side. Allah ﷻ replied that there is nothing in Bait-ul-Muqaddas or Bait-ul-Allah but it is mainly the command of Allah ﷻ that matters. The command was first to turn towards Bait-ul-Muqaddas and turning towards it was the ibaadat (worship) and now the command is to turn towards Bait-ul-Allah and turning now towards it was the ibaadat (worship). So the real thing is about the following the command of Allah ﷻ and His ﷻ obedience is the worship and this is calledthe servitude.

Seek Allah’s ﷻ help through patience and salah

The Rabbul Aalameen tells the people of eemaan that if they need His ﷻ help then seek through patience and prayer through which He ﷻ grants His ﷻ help. Allah ﷻ says not to call those who die in His ﷻ path and sacrificed their lives for His ﷻ deen as dead for they are having an excellent life with Him ﷻ for which thousand lives can be sacrificed. Allah ﷻ tests one by taking something from him or granting something to him and whoever exercise patience, he attains the goal and say “inna lillaahi wa inna ilaihi raajioon”. We and everything of us belong to Allah ﷻ and He ﷻ has the right to take away anything from us and when we return to Him ﷻ we will get the reward from Him ﷻ. Whoever has such patience, on him will be the shower of Allah’s ﷻ mercy. It is mentioned that safa and marwaa are from the signs of Allah ﷻ. There used to be idols here before the advent of Islam after which they became the signs of Allah ﷻ where in Muslims used to made duaa during “sai”.

The lowly act of hiding the truth
Those people are the most unfortunate ones who for few worthless pennies hide the truth and they have the curse of Allah ﷻ. Allah’s ﷻ tawheed (oneness) is then mentioned that Allah ﷻ is one and unique in His being and having the characteristics. See the governance of the world which is run solely by Allah ﷻ and see Whose command runs in the wind and breeze of this world and see Who pegged the mountains on the earth and Who brought forth the fruits and grains from the earth. Everything invites towards Allah’s ﷻ tawheed and Power. Allah ﷻ says, “O people eat that is pure”. Allah ﷻ calls us towards righteousness while shaitaan calls towards evil. Allah ﷻ then mentions about the forbidden things that pig is haram, the meat that is slaughtered in the name of other than Allah ﷻ is haram, the flowing blood is haram and animals that are dead are haram to consume. Allah ﷻ repeatedly mentions not to hide the truth for it is such a lowly act to buy the misguidance in place of few worthless pennies. It is a thing of great courage to have patience over the punishment of Allah ﷻ for hiding the truth for worldly benefits. This is how Allah ﷻ disapproves the act of hiding the truth for worldly benefits and this is the summary of the first juzz of Quran.

Evils and Misfortunes

أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Our bold claim of purity

A person complained about his problems and worries in a letter to a Hazrat. The Hazrat replied, “It is natural for a human to feel distressed but I see you writing in your letter that you never oppressed anyone or caused any harm to others. Why then I am facing such troubles?” This is our general state. We think we never betrayed others or oppressed anyone, then why do we face many troubles. Why am I the only one facing all the troubles from the affairs of my daughter to children and the business? This is the general thinking that why am I facing all sort of distress when I didn’t harm anyone. The person too wrote such a thing to the Hazrat. The Hazrat replied, “There are two things. The first thing is the man doesn’t realize his mistake. Claiming that I never betrayed anyone’s right or did any harm to others, I wish Allah ﷻ makes it so but it is a difficult thing to happen. Only Allah ﷻ knows how many times we would have hurt someone but the one who does mistake doesn’t realize his mistakes. Also a person has in his mind the picture of what is oppression and according to that, he feels he didn’t oppress anyone. This is what happens and thus the man doesn’t realize his mistakes thinking him to be very pure and free from such evils. So the Hazrat wrote let Allah ﷻ make it so that he didn’t harm anyone but one should never claim and think that he is free from evils or shortcomings. One should always keep seeking forgiveness and repent from deep heart before Allah ﷻ for the sins and evils one have. Never let any waswasa (whispering) or thought that a mistake can never happen from me.

The cause of misfortunes

It has been narrated that the Prophet ﷺ made duaa, “O Allah! Forgive me for whichever Muslim I harmed or abused or beat or cursed and make this in his favor a source of mercy, purity and a means of gaining proximity to You”. Allahu Akbar! When Allah’s ﷻ Prophet ﷺ is making such a duaa and seeking His ﷻ forgiveness, then how can we say that a mistake never happened from our side and I never transgressed against anyone? Also though the general rule is that the misfortunes befalling us are due to our own evil deeds as mentioned in the Quran, “Wamaa asaabakum min museebatin fabimaa kasabat aydeekum”- “Whatever misfortune happens to you, is because of the things your hands have wrought” (Al Quran: 41:30), but the rule is not necessarily be the same for every person that it is always because of his misdeeds that misfortunes are befalling him. If this is the general rule all the time, then the Prophets (peace be upon all of them) and awliya of Allah ﷻ wouldn’t have faced poverty and misfortunes because some of them were innocent and some of them were protected from sins. The Prophet ﷺ said, “The Prophets are the ones who face the worst trials, then those who excel after them and so on”. People like us should think that the troubles we are facing are due to our own misdeeds. Even if one is so sure that he didn’t commit any sin, even then he doesn’t have to be distressed for the misfortunes because even the Prophets (peace be on all of them), the Companions (let Allah ﷻ be pleased with them) and the awliya of Allah ﷻ faced it. So how can one say why he is facing all the misfortunes when he didn’t harm anyone or oppress anyone? A Companion of the Prophet ﷺ told the Prophet ﷺ, “Ya Rasoolullah! I love you”. The Prophet ﷺ said, “O dear! Watch out what you say?” The Sahabi said again, “Ya Rasoolullah! I love you”. The Prophet ﷺ repeated the same and so the Sahabi when the Prophet ﷺ said, “Be then ready to face the poverty because the poverty runs towards the person loving me just like water runs from top of the valley towards its bottom”. So thinking that misfortunes are always the cause of our misdeeds is not correct when the misfortunes can come because of our closeness to Allah ﷻ. Whatever be the case, the misfortunes are sure to come because this is dunya.

The sign of being close to Allah ﷻ and the sign of our sins

O honorable ones! Let Allah ﷻ grant us His ﷻ kurb (closeness or proximity) because if the misfortunes befall us based of the kurb, then the sign is our heart will remain tranquil and if the misfortunes come because of our sins, then our heart will remain restless and this is its sign. If a man faces trouble because of the kurb, then he will become more close to Allah ﷻ and if he faces problem because of misdeeds, then the complaints come on his tongue and a person abandons doing good deeds thinking negatively why he is facing troubles when he is doing righteous deeds. He thinks negatively that he is doing righteous deeds and still the diseases come into his house and thus gives up good deeds. My opinion is that a person should spend more time in seclusion with Allah ﷻ and keep making duas and he should never rely on his plan that it will fetch him success because a plan can result in some means of success but it is only Allah ﷻ who can make it effective. You should never rely on your plan. The trust should be placed only on Allah ﷻ. The plan is only a means and it is only Allah ﷻ Who puts effect in it. One should never think that his duaa is not accepted and he should make duaa with complete confidence and one should have the faith that the duaa is definitely accepted but keep in mind that sometimes a duaa is accepted with a different face. It has been mentioned many times in a hadith that the trials are a part of this dunya. So saying that I didn’t oppress anyone or transgressed against anyone, never earned haram money etc., doesn’t make sense though it is a big claim that one never hurt anyone when only Allah ﷻ knows how many we hurt day and night. One should always keep seeking forgiveness from Allah ﷻ. And whenever an evil befalls you, turn towards Allah ﷻ for forgiveness with deep regret and then seek Allah’s ﷻ help to save you from the trouble you are facing.

The scale of earning rewards

Having hatred towards sins is praiseworthy and an excellent quality based on the rank and saving oneself from sin in spite of having strong desire for it is excellent based on the reward. If you worry when you will become buzurg (pious elder) and a single evil thought will never cross your mind, then this will never happen. But yes if you take courage and save yourself from sin in spite of having a strong affinity towards it, then inshaaAllah the strength to commit a sin will reduce and the power that drags you towards the sin will reduce. This will definitely happen but it won’t end completely for there will always be a struggle and more you struggle, more reward you will earn. So the struggle against committing a sin in spite of having strong affinity is great but so is the reward. A young man saving himself from an evil glance earns more reward than an old man saving from evil glance because the young man has more affinity towards that sin than the old man. He has the peak of youthfulness, strength and a strong desire and so he gets more reward than the old man when he saves himself from the sin. During young age, the environment of sinning is large; the ability to sin is high with regards to strength and voracity. That is why the difference between worshipping during young age and old age is like between the weight of gold and iron. And as far as the old man who was worshipping during his young age and also during his old age, he will get the reward as when he was young. For him is the weight of gold and not that of iron.
The season of wilaayat

If you take one “mun” (about 16 kgs) of gold and one “mun” of iron, both are of one “mun” but the difference in value is huge like between the heavens and the earth. Similarly the difference between the prostration of a young man and an old man is like that of the gold and iron. As far as the old man who kept pleasing Allah ﷻ even during his young age, he will have the value like that of the gold and not iron and he won’t see the difference when he attains his old age because when there is more strength and vigor and the man saves himself from the sin, then his reward too will be more. And that is why one gets wilaayat (the friendship of Allah ﷻ) soon during young age. The real season of becoming a wali is in the young age as it is attained soon. So let one save from sin taking courage. Definitely there will be a strong desire but take courage. The more one takes courage the more one will gain the noor. If one doesn’t get a certain thing in a place, then that thing has more value in that place. Where one doesn’t get mangoes, see how people relish the mangoes there and how much value it has. Here we get mangoes cheap but how many places are there on the earth where one won’t get mangoes easily and people yearn for it. I heard that a place doesn’t have much grapes and when the jamaat from that place went to Afghanistan, they found grapes much cheaper than the meat and so the people kept eating more grapes as they get meat in their place but not the grapes. Similarly, Allah ﷻ doesn’t have ijz-o-Inkasari (humility) for He ﷻ has only greatness and so when ijz-o-Inkasari comes from a slave towards Allah’s ﷻ court, it has greater value. There is no ijz-o-Inkasari with Allah ﷻ and no crying and pleading with Him ﷻ. And when these gifts of crying, pleading and tears go to Allah ﷻ, then it has much greater value. This is a rare thing in Allah’s ﷻ court for He ﷻ has only greatness and greatness. When the things like the humility, ijz-o-Inkasari, the broken heart, the painful and regretful heart that a sin has happened goes to the court of Allah ﷻ, they have a high value for these are the rare things of that place.

Know some difference

Frugality differs from miserliness. Once Uthman was disturbed about the lamp burning inside his house in vain. By this time a beggar came to his house and wondered what sort of house he ended up with where people are making issue all over a lamp. And when he begged in the name of Allah ﷻ, Uthman  came outside and gave him 500 gold coins. He was completely astonished and when he asked Uthman  about this, he  said, “As far as the lamp issue, I will be answerable to Allah ﷻ and it is also only Allah ﷻ Who will reward me for offering you. That is why there is frugality and here is liberality.” So frugality and miserliness both are different. Miserliness is to stop oneself from spending in good acts and frugality is to stop oneself from spending extravagantly and lavishly for one’s pleasure. Contentment is to remain pleased with whatever one gets and greed is to think if I also get such and such things, it would be nice. Each has its own definition. Once a person received a guest and he presented before him the barley bread with the best of his ability to offer. The guest said if there was salt with this bread, it would have been nice. The host didn’t have the salt and so he took a bowl with him and bought salt in exchange of that bowl and presented before the guest. After finishing the meal, the guest said, “O Allah! Praise to you for the food and for granting me the contentment over the food”. Hearing this, the host replied, “If you had contentment, my bowl would have been sparred”. So contentment is to remain content with whatever one gets.

Get the true understanding of deen by reading the lives of our pious elders

Let Allah ﷻ grant us the understanding of deen. By reading the lives of the people of Allah ﷻ, though without doubt if we cannot become like them, at least we will get the true understanding of deen that how much we lag behind in deen. O the dear ones! At least doesn’t this much realization occur in us? Without doubt, those were great people and let Allah ﷻ create in us some of their good qualities. Definitely we will get some estimation of the real face of deen that how far we are from deen and the idol inside us about our thinking that we have become buzurgs gets removed. We get the feeling of how inferior we are because of which we get the feeling of regret, shame and guilt and one gets the tawfeeq to repent which is a great thing. By reading the lives of people of Allah ﷻ and the Companions , these are the things that will be created in us. It is advised to go to such a deeni majlis (religious gathering) from where we will return with discontentment over our deeni state and not from where we think that we have become great buzurgs. Our state is that we want our religiousness to be praised and it is enough if someone makes us happy with that. While the case of the Companions (let Allah ﷻ be pleased with them) is so different that they go to such a gathering after which they cry like a Sahabi cried, “Hanzalah has become a munaafiq (hypocrite); Hanzalah has become a munaafiq”. They used to see such great faces of deen and picture of deen that when they compare themselves to such a scenario, they think themselves to be nothing. So these are the qualities that will be created in us on reading the lives of righteous slaves of Allah ﷻ.

The evil of jealousy
The hasad (jealousy) inclines one towards the lowliest of lowly acts and that is why in Surah Falaq, one seeks exclusive protection from hasad. If one becomes a haasid (jealous), he will even push his own brother into a well. If one becomes a haasid, we see that one of the sons of Adam  killed the other son. Hasad is a very dangerous thing. Let Allah ﷻ protect us from jealousy and also protect us from jealous people. Jealousy is a big disease and a man can do worst lowly acts because of this. The more one is inclined towards this dunya, the more one is prone to jealousy. If Allah ﷻ preserves one from worldly desires for wealth, praise, fame, honor and if he wishes only to become honored in the sight of Allah ﷻ in the akhirat, then Allah ﷻ will purify his heart from hasad and malice. The hasad is created based on worldly things and not on deeni aspect. As far as deeni aspect, one doesn’t get hasad but only gets gibta that is he desires that Allah ﷻ has made so and so righteous and let Allah ﷻ make him too righteous without wanting others to lose their blessings. This is something praiseworthy. Hasad is to yearn for something that the other has for his own self and even if he doesn’t get that thing he wants the thing to be snatched away from the other person. The mindset is, “If I get it or not, the other person should not have it”. It is a very dangerous disease. Let Allah ﷻ protect us all from that. Let Allah ﷻ remove this disease from our hearts and also protect us from the jealous people. Let Allah ﷻ grant us tawfeeq to act on what we hear, write and read. Ameen
