أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Ihdinassiraatal mustaqeem-Guide me to the straight path

Hidaayat, the guidance is very essential for mankind. Allah ﷻ himself taught us to ask for hidaayat and made us understand the importance of hidaayat. If you get the hidaayat and you get nothing related to this world, you have indeed got everything and if you didn’t get hidaayat and got everything related to this world, you got nothing. Hazrat Bilal  didn’t have anything worldly but he got the hidaayat and today you name your child as Bilal. Qaroon got everything worldly materialistic but no hidaayat and so he was rejected and cursed even today. The truth is if one gets nothing but hidaayat, he indeed got everything and the one who got everything but no hidaayat, he got nothing. That is why there is a lesson in Surah Fatiha and the whole summary of this Surah is present in the entire Quran. May be this is the reason why it is compulsory for Muslims to either recite this Surah or to listen to this Surah in salaah. When the slave asked Allah ﷻ for hidaayat, Allah ﷻ gave the entire Quran as the guidance as an answer to his prayer.

The three groups of people

The beginning of the Surah Baqarah starts with the surety that there is no doubt in this Book and indeed it is Allah’s ﷻ Book. Whatever is affirmed in Surah be that of success or failure, honor or dishonor, salvation or abjection, do not doubt it for they are very true. The promises of Allah ﷻ are very true. Whatever Allah ﷻ has said is very true and there is no doubt in it. The mankind is of three groups. The people of one group make it firm in their mind to live in accordance with Allah’s ﷻ commands or to live the life of Quran and they are called the believers, the people of eemaan. Few qualities of them are mentioned that they believe in unseen things, they establish prayer, pay zakaat and they firmly believe in aakhirat. These are people who have accepted the rule based on Quran from heart. The other group is about kuffaar who openly proclaim that they do not believe in Quran. This group is mentioned in two aayats. The third group is of munaafiqeen (hypocrites) who reject Quran from the heart but show themselves as believers for materialistic benefits. A munaafiq is one who rejects the Islamic life from heart, Quranic life from heart but uses the name of Islam from time to time to benefit materialistically. Just for worldly benefits, Islam can be heard from his tongue and the praises of Islam from his tongue. These are the group of munaafiqeen. As these people are the most dangerous for the ummat of Muslimeen, they are mentioned in 13 aayats when the believers are mentioned in 4 aayats and the Kuffar in 2 aayats. It is advised to Muslims to keep away from these people and their typical characteristics are lying, mocking at the people of Islam, verbally insulting the pious people, to think them as fools and their job is spread corruption on the earth in the name of islaah (reformation). These are the signs of munaafiqeen. These people are mentioned like deaf and blind. These munaafiqeen had eyes but they did not see the admonition and by hearing they didn’t take the path of guidance.

The oneness of Allah

The tawhid (oneness) of Allah ﷻ was mentioned in very simple words. It is Allah ﷻ who created the heavens the earth, who organized the universe and who brought forth provisions from the earth and so it is the right of Allah ﷻ that He is the only one to be worshipped. Quran is the word of Allah ﷻ without any doubt and it is such a great miracle that even if the whole world tries, a surah cannot be brought like in Quran. The kuffaar say what sort of Allah’s book is this which is mentioning about the flies and mosquitoes! It is replied Allah ﷻ gives example as needed. This world is very insignificant before Allah ﷻ and so its example is given like that of a mosquito. There in is the wisdom of Allah ﷻ and the believers believe in it. Keeping up the ties as per Allah’s ﷻ command is one of the characteristics of the believers while the characteristics of the enemies of Allah ﷻ is that they severe the ties of kinship against Allah’s ﷻ command.

The incident of cow

Allah ﷻ then mentions about the creation of Adam (AS), Hawwa (AS) and the misleading of the accursed shaitaan and his enmity towards mankind. Allah ﷻ exalted Adam (AS) in ilm (knowledge) which is not present even in the angels. Allah ﷻ mentions about Bani Israel and this is such a nation that they are mentioned in about 28 ajzaa of Quran. Allah ﷻ bestowed upon them a lot of blessings that hundreds of Prophets came from this nation. Allah ﷻ honored them in the world like their enemy Fir’awn was drowned before them, their paths made through the sea, Allah ﷻ brought forth gushing springs from rocks on striking the staff against them when they needed water and when they suffered from extreme heat, Allah ﷻ shadowed them with clouds. In spite of all these blessings of Allah ﷻ, this nation became very ungrateful. They started to break the promises they made with Allah ﷻ, mixed truth with falsehood, concealed the truth to gain the worldly benefits, they killed the Prophets of Allah ﷻ, they oppressed the poor among them and they overlooked the akhirat for the worldly benefits. When they started being ungrateful to the blessings of Allah ﷻ, Allah ﷻ humiliated them and disgraced them.

When this nation is mentioned, Allah ﷻ brings about a particular incident of Baqarah (cow) which is given as the name of this surah. Among Bani Israel, someone killed a man and threw the dead body in front of the deceased house. They started accusing each other with the murder and a sort of war started whenever they came across each other. They came to the Prophet Musa ؑ and asked him ؑ to pass the judgment and so he ؑ made a plea to Allah ﷻ. Allah ﷻ instructed them to slaughter a cow and to struck part of it on the deceased when Allah ﷻ will bring him alive and he himself will disclose the murderer. When Musa ؑ passed on the instruction to Bani Israel, initially they made fun of him ؑ about slaughtering of the cow and striking the deceased but the Prophets ؑ  say only those that Allah ﷻ tells them. Irrespective of one sees it as logical or illogical, those who follow the Prophets ؑ won’t go on digging the reasons and wisdom behind the commands but they only see who the one saying is and who the one is commanding to the one saying. The one who is saying is a Prophet ؑ and the one who is commanding is Allah ﷻ. Hazrat Musa ؑ told them that he ؑ is not making fun of them and they did what he ؑ instructed them. On striking the deceased with part of the slaughtered cow, the deceased became alive and informed about the murderer. There comes the condemnation of Bani Israel for their ingratitude and their excess involvement in practicing black magic. They are then condemned for daring to belittle the Prophet ﷺ. The wall of hatred that stands between the Jews and the Nasara (Christians) was mentioned.

The status of Ibrahim ؑ

Allah ﷻ praises Ibrahim ؑ and how he ؑ stood firm in all the tests like when he ؑ was commanded to slaughter the child and when he ؑ was commanded to abandon the family. Ibrahim ؑ remained the man of Allah ﷻ throughout the trials. Allah ﷻ bestowed several blessings upon him and considered his prayers. Allah honored him by constructing the Baitullah through his hands.  The second greatness about him is Allah ﷻ bestowed this ummah with the Prophet ﷺ through his prayers. Our beloved Prophet ﷺ is the seal of all the Prophets and the leader of all the Prophets. Allah ﷻ then mentions about the millat (religion) of Ibrahim ؑ that the one who leaves the religion of Ibrahim ؑ should be an ignorant, unfortunate and will remain cursed. Only such a person will deviate from the millat of Ibrahim ؑ.

The condition for the acceptance of eemaan

Allah ﷻ then praises the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ and declared that the eemaan of a person is accepted when his eemaan is like that of the Companions. The condition for the affirmation of one’s eemaan is it should be like the eemaan of the Companions when he will be said to be guided. When Prophet ﷺ arrived in Madinah, he ﷺ prayed in the direction of Baitul muqaddas for approximately 16 months. His wished that the qibla of Ibrahim, Baitullah becomes the qibla of the ummat of Muhammad ﷺ. With this wish, he ﷺ used to look towards the heavens very often and Allah ﷻ mentions this in Quran. Allah ﷻ then granted to the Prophet ﷺ the change of qibla from Baitul Muqaddas to Baitullah.

The Jews got a chance for the propaganda saying how strange is that the qibla is changed and what will happen to those who prayed towards Baitul muqaddas and died in that state. Allah ﷻ replied to their propaganda that direction is not important for Him ﷻ but to follow His ﷻ command. As long as the command was to pray towards Baitul muqaddas, to pray towards it was ibaadat (worship) and now when Baitullah became qibla, to pray towards this is ibaadat. The real thing is the command of Allah ﷻ. Whenever Allah’s ﷻ command is obeyed, it becomes ibaadat.

Have patience during trials

Allah ﷻ then advises the believers to face the trials with patience and seek His ﷻ help through prayers. Allah ﷻ then talks about the greatness of giving one’s life in His ﷻ path to the extent He ﷻ doesn’t even allow to call these people as dead. They have such a beautiful life, which is known only to Allah ﷻ. Allah ﷻ then says when some trials come upon the believers and they exercise patience during such trials like lose of wealth or life, then they will become worthy of Allah’s ﷻ mercy. Allah ﷻ then condemns the Jews for hiding the truth. He ﷻ mentions about the tawheed of Allah ﷻ and tells that the shaitaan always calls us towards falsehood while Allah ﷻ calls towards the truth. He ﷻ then declares the haram things. Pig, blood and the animals slaughtered with the names other than Allah ﷻ are forbidden. And in the end Allah ﷻ condemns the Jews and mentions about their misguidance.
