Talluq of ulema

أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

The deen of Allah SWT is conveyed to mankind through His SWT messengers (peace be on all of them). The most knowledgable are the messengers and mankind revives in contact with the knowledgable. We have seen the history of companians of beloved Prophet SAW like how they changed from the state of darkness to light. A person of arrogance and harsh attitude was changed to a person of humble heart and love after being in contact with the Prophet SAW. This is infact the task given to the Prophets SAW to purify the mankind from the evil characteristics.

Now that we dont have our beloved Prophet SAW among us, this task goes to the ulema and this is what was mentioned by Prophet SAW that ulema are the inheritors of Prophets. One fitna we see around today is that layman taking the position of a scholar in attitude eventhough he/she is very ignorant. A layman doesnt recongonize his/her ignorance and doesnt recognize a true scholar. This infact is a great fitna for the difference between a learned and an ignorant is like the difference between day and night and was clearly warned by the beloved Prophet SAW that towards end of times, the learned ones will not be recongnized.

And We have indeed made the Qur’an  easy to understand and remember; then is there any one who will remember (or receive admonition)? (  سورة القمر  , Al-Qamar, Chapter 54, Verse 17)

I did listen to one of the lectures of a scholar and explained that this ayah does not mean that any layman can take the Quran and understand its meaning fully but it means that the rulings of Quran are easy to act on. We need scholars to explain the ayah. The understanding was given to Prophet SAW who inturn taught his companians (RA) and thus the knowledge was conveyed and preserved. If the Quran doesnt need a scholar to explain, then Allah SWT would have descended the Quran on the roofs of sahabahs (RA) without sending a messenger to explain to them. Thus to understand the Quran, we need to turn to scholars and gain the knwoledge from them. As far as the basic understanding of tawheed that can be understood by any human provided he ponders on the creations of Allah SWT and this has been repeatedly pointed in the Quran so men take heed.

The other evil which is wide spread is that this self-taught approach makes a layman think himself high which is a destruction. One of the greatest trials that ulema face and srive against is the thought of pride that shaitan puts in their mind due to their divinely knowledge. If this is a trial for learned scholars, how then it would be for a layman who inspite of his ignorance thinks himself too learned, which is nothing but destruction. Unfortunately today we are in the times which was described by one of our predecessors who are bestowed with wisdom and knowledge. Abu Hazim Al-Ashja’i (d. 100H; companion of Abu Hurairah) said: “If you find yourself in a time when speech is accepted as knowledge and knowledge is accepted as deeds (instead of putting it into practice), then you are in the worst time and with the worst people.” This scenario is clearly seen amidst the general mass today where we hear laymen speaking on Quran and sunnah with little amal thereby losing the essence in his/her speech.

As explained elsewhere, just like the explanation of Quran rests on scholars and so is to do with purification of the soul, which is one another greatest task.

Indeed Allah conferred a great favour on the believers when He sent among them a Messenger from among themselves, reciting unto them His verses and purifying them and instructing them the Book and Al-Hikmah, while before that they had been in manifest error. (Aal-e-Imran, Chapter 3, Verse 164, Al-Quran)

Thus I see that its important for every muslim to have talluq with a scholar who would help us to understand deen and with whom we can discuss the evil of our ownselves to get help in purifying it. I read somewhere that Allah SWT sends healing to the physical body through the hands of medical doctors and healing to the hearts through the words of scholars. Now coming to know that every muslim should have a contact with a scholar, we have the question how do we find them who is the most truthful and pious to be in touch with. Clearly we see that in todays time, the scholars too are one of the greatest fitnas as prophesized by our beloved Prophet SAW that that true scholars would not be recognized and ignorant ones will become popular and lead people astray.

Now that we face the situation, how do we recognize the true scholars when we are surrounded by fitna. One thing is clear that when Allah SWT says that He SWT will preserve His SWT Book, He SWT will also preserve the scholars who are needed to understand and to purify oneself. So the best thing is to turn to Allah SWT and pray to Him SWT to get us contact of the righteous scholars. The other thing is when we obey Allah SWT and fear Him SWT and stay away from sins, that is having taqwa, Allah SWT will give us the ability to recognize right scholars and distinguish those on haqq from those who are on batil and this is the promise of Allah SWT.

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِن تَتَّقُوا اللَّهَ يَجْعَل لَّكُمْ فُرْقَانًا

O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you furqan (a criterion to judge between right and wrong) Al-Anfal, Chapter 8, Verse 29)

Its because of sins that puts a muslim in confused state about recognizing right scholars or else just like how a parrot is inclined towards other parrots or any species inclining towards the particular species, a heart filled with fear of Allah SWT and thereby abstaining from sins and obeying Allah SWT will recognize the true scholars and get inclined towards righteous people.

My sheikh

I on my side in finding a righteous scholar I performed salatul istikhara many times as suggested by a scholar and got in touch with sheikh Maulana Abdus Sattar hafizahullah, Imam and Khateeb Masjid Bait us Salam, karachi, Pakistan and Alhamdulillah I get a very good help in spiritual guidance by the leave of Allah SWT. His talks could be found here http://www.fahmedeen.org/new/index.php. Whenever I feel down and realize my eeman weak or related to worldly affairs, I get in touch with him and Alhamdulillah its always been a boost and his bayans (lectures) are straight out very precious for me Alhamdulillah. Although my urdu is not that good, he has so much patience in hearing me and guiding me by the help of Allah SWT. Let Allat SWT reward him immensely in both the worlds and preserve such scholars and give us more of such scholars. Ameen ameen thumma ameen.

In this category, I would like to present some points that I gather from my sheikh’s speech. Although I cannot reflect his speech in its entirety which has a soothening effect on the hearts by the leave of Allah due to his patience, depth of knowledge and understanding which could be realized by only those who are blessed with listening to his lectures, I would like to present here whatever I can and whatever I grasped. This infact was one of the main resaons to open up this blog. The sheikh’s talks are in urdu and when I realized the treasure in his talks, I wanted to share with those who cannot understand urdu. Clearly my writings wont justify his talks but its my eagerness that my fellow muslims too should be benefited made me to take this step by leave of Allah SWT. Let Allah SWT preserve our scholars and forgive us all for our shortcomings. Ameen
